In-universe, he was probably picked due to his participation in the ground battle during the Rebel commando mission on Ylesia, and his command of part of the Rebel force there. Also, any number of similar experiences could have happened in the years between ANH and ESB that could warrant his being picked to lead the commandos.

Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shape-shifting Master of Darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil,
but a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow
was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future, where my evil is law! Now, the fool
seeks to return to the past, and undo the future that is Aku...

Crix Madine could have teamed up with Jedi Knight Skywalker and have a party in the bunker, up until Luke decided to go and get zapped by Palpatine. Seeing Han on a speeder bike would have been much more appropriate in my opinion.

Come on: after seeing stormtroopers kick the shit out of rebels in the previous two films it would have been a nice change of pace to see Rebel Special Forces slaughter them in kind.
