Mt. St. Helens is going to kill you.

Volcanoes in the Cascade Range are all at normal levels of background seismicity except Mount St. Helens. See Mount St. Helens update below.

Other volcanoes include,Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.

USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory, the Pacific Northwest Seismograph Network at the University of Washington, and the USGS Northern California Seismic Network and Volcano Hazards Team in Menlo Park, California, monitor the major volcanoes in the Cascade Range of northern California, Oregon, and Washington.

Mount St. Helens Daily Update 9/27/04 7:00 PM PDT

Seismic activity has very slowly increased throughout the day. All earthquake locations are still shallow and beneath the dome. The largest earthquake recorded in the past 24 hours has been about a M1.5 and no M2 earthquakes have been detected in the past 24 hours. Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) crews installed GPS equipment today to monitor any ground movement on the dome, crater floor and the slopes of the volcano. Preliminary results from a gas flight late this afternoon did not detect any magmatic gas around the lava dome.

Great. *STAB* <=======:o=]==O

As for the question, ask Captain Chewbacca. *Shrug* I don't know the conditions that precipitated the last eruption.

I'd rather see what Yosemite's big bomb is doing. When that baby goes off, half of America won't need no spaceship to get a ride to orbit.

We'll know if it's going to go when they get the ground deformation results in, but as long as they arent detecting magmatic outgassing activity beyond the tremor swarms, then it's probably hard to say what's going on. There's a thread on it somewhere further down where Capt.Chewbacca said it was probably going to be an explosion rather than an eruption.

I'm pretty sure it'll erupt sometime, so yes. I say this in the same way that I'm pretty sure Vesuvius and Mt. Rainer will also erupt sometime. It's going to happen eventually. I just don't know if it'll be soon or not.

Isn't that thing blowing like the equivalent of an asteroid hitting you?

And when did it blow last time?

Something like an asteroid. It's not mass extinction-level size, but we'd be in pretty deep shit. It last erupted something like 640,000 years ago, and has an approximately 600,000 year cycle.

North America has pretty much always been a volcanic death trap. Had the K-T asteroid not hit, dinosaurs probably still would have died out here.

The dead rhinos from the eruption 2 million years ago can be found as far as Kansas.

Knew it began with a "y".

I haven't heard anything about it lately, but ground penetrating radar and ultrasonics have said that there's quite a mass of magma below the park. Even if it doesn't explode, that's one spicy soup going to pour out if it gives way.

A second eruption so soon after the 1980 blast sounds a bit hasty, it is probably only a mild burp after the blast 20 years ago - probably...

Seems most everything has been covered, but I'd like to point out that the last Yellowstone eruption didn't cause any mass-extinctions, even in North America.

Sure the US will be screwed, and temps will drop 10 degrees worldwide, but life goes on. And hey, no more global warming!

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

I am fairly confident there will be a small eruption, just as there have been several small eruptions at St. Helens since the 1980 blast. It'll build up the lava dome a bit, maybe let off a nice plume of smoke. That'll be it.
