The Glorious Battle of the Bridge!

Basically this Gallic army tried to assault my roman army....
so I positioned my army on the other side of the bridge and
placed my barbarian mercenaries to take the brunt, with my
roman troops standing in reserve

The Frenchies never got past the bridge, and lost half their strength,
1,000 men in beginning, 500 men in the end; while my mercenaries
were horribly decimated, the average merc unit starting with 120 men
and ending with 20-30.

My main Roman force never entered combat at all.

Unfortunately, my AI reinforcements led by a family member from
a nearby city charged right into the bridge slaughter, and my family
member leading the charge was slaughterd in the first 1.5 seconds

Oh well, I never liked that guy as a family member

I've been getting the hang of it. Revolts seem a little touchy, but otherwise the game is awesome awesome awesome. My first city assault was especially fun.

I caught up with the Gaullic Band that survived the Battle of the Bridge
and utterly destroyed it. out of 297 Gauls who met me by the coast;
NONE SURVIVED

hmm rome total war should get patched with Shogun Total war....

see if we can have some glorious battle in a rainstorm...

then again, I would hate to see the legions of rome after they are introduced to peasants with bamboo and metal guns....

This time around, my barbarian mercenaries were greatly outnumbered
by my Roman infantry which I had transferred from the east earlier, and
they only contributed Cavalry.

How many men do you command? In Medieval, at about normal unit sizes you could easily throw together a 5,000-6,000 man army, but at Large and Huge, the units took extra time to build, which sort of defeated the point...

with respect to the bridge battle, why not position a phalanx at the end of the bridge, and have archers/siege engines pour fire onto the frenchies as they bottnecked onto the bridge, as opposed to getting all those mercs killed? the psychological effect of seeing 30 guys at a time obliterated by boulders may well have been enough to make them break and run while you didn't actuvely engage any of your forces.....

Perhaps...well, can you do me a favor and replay that battle using that method and tell me how it goes? (The phalanx is to meet the stragglers that DO make it across the bridge.

Its because they use a modified version of R:TW for their simulations.

Hey Shep, I don't think you mentioned that you can set archers and seige weaponry to set their ammunition ablaze. It's pretty cool when you see flaming arrows connecting with their opponents and a little charred corpes appears breifly....

With Medieval TW, putting masses of archers and cross bowmen and even bastilla's at the shore line, with a 'plug' at the end of the bridge (say of spearmen) will end in disaster. Your bowmen will not ravage the enemy enough, specially since the AI will usually send multible phalanxs at you. But bunch them up ON the bridge, and the fun starts.

Granted, this is MTW, but I will soon have RTW and give your idea a try.

Strange I did exactly that tactic against a3x Caliphatearmy on a bridge, and creamed them. Only started losing casualtiesonce I ran out of ammo andha to entice the AI to continually charge my troops on the bridge.

The battle began with the bridge plugged, the Mongols tried to storm it. Their heavy cavalry was massacred by archers, and then my spearmen started pushing the enemy back.
It worked the same way with enemy infantry, though my casualties were a little higher.

Of course, I don't use archers with valour lower than 2, so this may be a factor - though here they weren't as good.

As per Rome...it looks awesome from the trailers, and I don't care about any fucking shields not clipping just right enough.

Gee, since your spearmen are on the brige fighting in the bottleneck I said I usually do with Archers in support, I don't see how this disproves my musings.

If your spearmen were on the end of the bridge, not engaged, and your archers were repelling the attack, then I'd see it.

Uhh....you've only said that plugging the bridge would end in disaster. It didn't. The enemy were pushed back onto the bridge and then to the other side, with a kill ratio clearly on my side.
