I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Rather then going in and flaming them for being stupid, try educating them. They are apparently "new" to the debates and don't know the proper way to conduct it. Don't tell them which side will flat out win, just tell them how its done, give them places to look at the evidence, and give examples just to show them how it works. If you go in insulting them that they are wrong, they will simply ignore you. If you go in politely and show them the right way, but don't back down to their refusal (invariably anyone being shown the proper way to look at something will balk at first) and don't insult them yet.
The likes of Darkstar needs flamming, not everyone in general.

Alyeska: Thats not the way of this board (SD.net) flames tend to fly fast and in large numbers as you know, I have told many of them how it works before but since none of them have anything to debate upon bar the most quick glances they reason Trek wins (or that wars wins but for idiot reasons) - they think the idea of measuring asteriod etc to get weapon calcs is stupid (its just a little over analytical) because simply its just idle debate not formalised to the degree seen here.
In short (or not so short as it maybe) they dont really care and will likely get flamed once they arrive on the board (then again who doesnt).

Then I suggest that the local warsie compliment remain civil to these people. They are obviously inexperienced in these VS debates and it is unfair to treat them like Darkstar. Darkstar is willfully ignorant, these people just don't know and thus can't be judged by the normal standards which assume people DO know. They also can't be expected to read through the entirety of Mike's webpage. Point them in the general direction, provide a little evidence, and be nice.Mr Bean wrote:I have invited them Here

There have been times where rather then attempt to correct the assumptions I felt were "wrong" that warsies made of Trek, I corrected the mistakes that trekkies made about Wars. I informed them that the Empire had millions of ships, 25,000 ISDs, the SSD is 17km long, etc... You might want to do the same. Give them straight basic facts but do NOT instantly agree or disagree on the sides. They say the Federation wins, you give them the numbers but do NOT say the Empire wins or the Federation looses. They will be smart enough to look at the numbers and realize their mistake. You also might want to grant them some liberal numbers on Trek just to prove the point. They want 1.2 GT level photon torpedoes, let them have it just to prove that its still not enough to match an HTL.

Which is the worst possible way to go about it. You want people to form their own opinion, but would prefer they do it inteligently and possibly take your side. You don't go about it by treating them like shit. I have politely debate with idiot trekkies before showing where they were incorrect about Wars, and in the end they changed their basic opinion and respected what I told them. They didn't automatically assume Trek won, and infact when they realized the numbers against Trek they soon understood what was really going on. Even if you think a Galaxy can take down 2 ISDs, when the Empire has more then twice a ISDs as the Federation has ships, you see things in perspective. There might "minor" disagreements on the lower level debates, but the overall Fed Vs Empire debate would be settled.TheDarkling wrote:Alyeska: Thats not the way of this board (SD.net) flames tend to fly fast and in large numbers as you know, I have told many of them how it works before but since none of them have anything to debate upon bar the most quick glances they reason Trek wins (or that wars wins but for idiot reasons) - they think the idea of measuring asteriod etc to get weapon calcs is stupid (its just a little over analytical) because simply its just idle debate not formalised to the degree seen here.

I don't venture onto other boards to debate, because I like the lack of rules and regulations here. If they do decide to take Bean up on his offer, though, I will smash them.

Gee, so when one of them claims the Empire will crush the Federation, you will smash them?Master of Ossus wrote:I don't venture onto other boards to debate, because I like the lack of rules and regulations here. If they do decide to take Bean up on his offer, though, I will smash them.
Don't be an ass. Seems most of these people are new to the VS debates and inexperienced. You treat them with respect and educate them, don't insult them and try and smash their arguments. You probably COULD smash their arguments, but it won't do any good. Its better to convince them you are right rather then prove it bluntly. By being polite about it, they might join your side, if you aren't you might still "win" but they will resent you, ignore you, and leave while never changing their opinion AND possibly starting to resent all Warsies.

I was actually trying to be sarcastic, but I forgot to put to " " at the end of my post. Sorry, everybody.TheDarkling wrote:Way to go MOO proving what I have just being saying and doing what Alyeska advised against .
And yes, I will treat them with the respect that they earn, though I'm really not sure about how "n00b" some of them are. They seem to be too utterly entrenched to be complete n00bs. It appears that they are all misinformed about everything, as from the brief snippings I have read no one brings up any good points in their one sentence posts, which boil rapidly down to "ST sucks ass," or "SW's blows chunks."

I actually saw an inventive tactic that involved the Defiant and a single Lambda shuttle to take out the DS2. Shuttle lands on the planet and the rebels take out the shield generator. Cloaked Defiant moves to DS2 once the shield goes down. Launches its two shuttles which enter the DS structure, then the Defiant flies as deep into the construction area as possible and opens fire tearing through internal structure to get the attention of Tie-Fighters. Shuttles reach the inside and get REAL close to the reactor and detonate explossives inside taking out the reactor.TheDarkling wrote:Exactly - they arent debating so much as stating what they like and what they think is better, I remember one thread that had the Defiant taking out the DS 2
Just let them be and if they come looking for real info then we can destroy their minds with what we practice here (mind dumbing as it is)

Actually... That tactic didn't come from there, it came from SB over two years ago. It was the classic "Replace Rebels with Federation at Endor" thread. The only thing that stays the same is the Lambda shuttle. Different varations have the shuttle filled with explossives and it merely kamazies the Shield Generator. Another one was the Defiant sneaks through the shield with the shuttle, but Wong pointed out that for this to work the shield hole would have to be big, and we don't know how large an opening was formed to let the Shuttle through.Master of Ossus wrote:Wow. Indeed. I saw a variation of the "Lasers don't work against the Nav defelctor" argument being tossed around. Thats not pure idiocy, its just someone who doesn't know much about what they are debating.Master of Ossus wrote:Actually, reading further, they all remind me of User099.
