Best music/scene per SW movie

Post by Vympel »

A poll would be pointless for this, so here's my picks- note this is combined with music, not just scene's alone (e.g. my best scene pic would easily be AT-ATs attacking retreating Rebels on Hoth, as the retreat order is given)

1. TPM: Duel of the Fates. Not exactly a tough one here.

2. AOTC: Nuremberg-esque troop review at the end. Not exactly a tough one, as there's no other scenes where great music stands out on its own in company of a great scene.

3. ANH: MF vs the TIE Fighters, Luke & Han gunning.

4. TESB: debut of Imperial March in the OT along with the appearance of the Executor

5: ROTJ: this is a really hard one. Either the music as the trap around the Rebel fleet closes, the music when Luke goes into a rage, or the music when Anakin tosses Palpatine into the pit (and the preceding Emperor's theme)

I agree with you on all the movie-music scenes (I like the music with Luke's rage just a little bit more than the other in ROTJ) except for ANH. I thought the best movie-music scene was at the end of the first day on Tatooine with Luke staring wistfully at the two setting suns, the last night of him being a boy before he stepped into a much greater world.

The Carbon Freezing of Han Solo. The music was soaring romantic and poignant then just down right evil as Vader's mask cuts through the white mists. Still sends a shudder up my spine when I see it.

Luke staring up at the twin suns. SOmething so moving about that scene and the music completely sells it for us. (BY FAR my mom's favorite. She watches ANH just to see that scene.)

Luke taking on Jabba'a goons. Just a great reprise of the themes we've been hearing throughout the trilogy. It was the ultimate relaization that Luke was indeed a Jedi.

Luke loses it on Vader on the Death StarII. Beautiful, haunting, and the track that was by far the most requested by fans over the years to be released.

Asteroid sequence. If you didn't clutch the sides of your seat and cheer for Solo as he sent the Falcon soaring through the asteroids you just might be dead.

Yoda lifting the X-Wing out of the Swamp. Beautiful and shows us the majesty of teh light side of the force. (Certainly a far better show of Yoda's power than that somewhat silly lightsaber duel in AOTC.)
Wherever you go, there you are.

Great idea for a thread! My take would be:

1. TPM: While the small scene in which Qui-Gon strikes the deal with Watto (about Anakin's entry in the Pod Race) in the junk shop isn't particulary great, I really like the music accompying the scene. It's foreboding. Otherwise, the natural choice is of course Duel of the Fates.

2. AOTC: Suffers from too much recycled music (what did the editors, Burtt particulary, think when they threw much of JW's stuff in the bin?), but I really like Across the Stars (even if it doesn't accompying any really great scene). The music JW wrote for the Clone Wars segment that was left out of the movie (it can be heard on the soundtrack and in the AOTC DVD Geonosis menu, strangely enough) has a really cool bombastic feel to it that would have complemented the end battle nicely.

3. ANH: The music during the Death Star attack with the prominent The Force theme.

4. TESB: The Imperial March along with the Executor, but there are other great scenes with excellent music such as the Asteroid field and escape from Cloud City (although the SE and DVD editions changed the pacing).

5. ROTJ: The father and son duel when Luke goes into a rage. A great scene that, to me, defines the entire Original Trilogy. If ROTJ had been a bit more dark, with a more uncertain future for Luke that would resolve itself in the end, it would have been a great movie.

Luke's rage scene has one of the best uses of music. I'm glad to see others agree. I thought I was the only one to recognize its greatness.

Everybody cites the Imperial March from TESB, and I do love it myself, but I'm going to break with the usual concensus and give a different piece of music from the film as my pick for where music is used to best effect to evoke the emotional response the filmakers were looking for. I think the moment where Yoda pulls Luke's X-wing out of the water and floats it serenely towards him, then sets it gently down on the shore while Luke looks on in awe is the best. The music in this scene perfectly captures the appropriate sense of wonder at this feat, and suggests the power and majesty of the Force.

TPM: Duel of the Fates.

AOTC: Clone Trooper assembly at the end.

ROTS: TBD

ANH: 1) Tantive IV vs. Devestator , 2 )MF vs the TIE Fighters

TESB: Imperial March/ The Executor's debut

ROTJ: Has got the most in my case: 1) The Rebel fleet and the snapping of the trap, 2) Luke's rage, 3). Anakin's redemption (and the preceding Emperor's theme), 4). The Funeral Pyre.

Most of my favorites revolve around the Force theme. It's very simple, but depending on how it's played, it can be triumphant (the medal ceremony in ANH), hopefull (when Luke gets a new hand in TESB), mysterious (when Ben finds Luke in ANH), rousing (Vader/ Anakin giving Palps the shaft in ROTJ), sad (Ben's death, Anakin and Qui-Gonn's funerals, when Anakin leaves his mother), thrilling (the Rancor pit) and exciting (Qui-Gonn cutting through the door in TPM) and worrisome (when Anakin goes looking for Shmi). Even Wagner couldn't turn out such an all-purpose Leitmotif.

My favorites:

ANH: Luke looking into the sunset. It brings out the daydreaming kid in all of us.

TESB: Luke calling out to Ben, then Leia. That scene was the reason I guessed -correctly- that Leia was the "other".

ROTJ: Anakin/ Vader kills Palpatine along with the funeral. With each prequel, this scene gets sadder and sadder. My ex saw ROTJ after TPM and AOTC and cried her eyes out.

TPM: Qui-Gonn cutting through the door when Gunray says "This is impossible!"/ When the hangar doors open and reveal Darth Maul. There is more drama, tension and excitement in these two scenes than the rest of the movie.

AOTC: The Coruscant Nuremberg Rally/ The Wedding. They saved the best for last, literally.

TPM: Duel of the Fates, but only because nothing else really stands out. I feel like it got over-used/played to the point that it's sort of annoying now.

AOTC: Ending montage, from the troop review, to the wedding (I love the "Across the Stars" melody played in full sweeping symphonic form).

ANH: The "Force"/Binary Sunset theme. Major point when Luke was looking across the desert and also plays briefly when Ben sacrifices himself.

ESB: Closing hospital scene (since it pretty much is the Binary Sunset theme).

ROJ: Close tie between Vader's Funeral Pyre (again, Binary Sunset/Force theme) and Battle for Endor part I, when the fleet has just come out of hyperspace and is deploying, up to the part where they realize, "It's a trap!"

Edit: Seems like Elfdart and I have similar tastes ;)

God, so many good ones too choose from. :?

ANH, I love the pompt and ceremony of the final awards ceremony scene. The lighting, the troops and their facing movment, Leia looking hot, and a damn good song blaring in the background.

ESB, I'm departing from the Imperial March, though I do love it. For me, its a toss up between the Astroid chase scene/song and the variation of the Imperial March when Luke and Vader are going at it in the bowls of Cloud City.

RotJ, the spiffy military march like song playing while Wedge and Lando are in battle and then break off for the DS.

TPM, Duel of Fates.

AotC, hmmm. I guess I'll go with the pre-Imperial March at the end.

ROTS, well, I'll tell ya in about 7 months. :P

My favorite use of music is right when Vader tells Luke that he's his father... there's a drumroll and a slow, "Holy fuck" rendition of the March that matches Luke's growing realization and horror.

Just a few seconds, but goddamn.

My favorite music is during the escape from Bespin right after Lando, Chewie and Leia save Luke and pilot the falcon out of Bespin's orbit only to see the executor itself blocking their escape.

Well, this is totally impossible to really say. So for the sake of argument and a good flame I will attempt to put them in thier proper order.

Starting at 5.

5. The Battle of Endor Space theme. You hear the violens when they do the wing report, and it gets progressively harsher.

4. Throne Room A New Hope. Celebrating the great victory.
4a. Carbon Freeze Chamber. Oooh, this one sends chills up my spine. It's also present on the Shadows of the Empire soundtrack. I had to add this in as a sub. No sense in an actuall top 6, right?

3. Luke vs Vader, second wind Return of the Jedi. The music just helps to put away just how much was going on between Father and Son.

2. Vader's Funeral Pyre, Return of the Jedi. Damn, it could almost bring a tear to your eye when you think of the life he went through and the ending, with Luke having to burn his body.

and, drum roll please, the numero uno choice, the top dog, the king of the hill...

1. The Imperial March/Darth Vader's Theme; The Empire Strikes Back. When you first hear it strum up, and you know the Rebels are in trouble, you start to feel the tension. Then as you see a screen full of massive, mile long Imperial Star Destroyers, a shadow begins to loom over them. Then you see the Executor. That, is Imperial might.

TPM: Hmm, nevermind.

AOTC: Uh... nevermind.

I couldn't think of anything beyond "Duel of the Fates" and "Across the Stars."

ANH: The music that plays when Luke was doing the trench run is good. I REALLY like the Twin Sunset, and the music that plays right then.

ESB: Yoda pulling the X-wing out of the swamp was very nice. The very end of ESB, the music from the duel and the escape, but also the music from the Rebel Fleet. It's slow and builds up to the credits, and the image we see is of a defeated force that's not beaten.

ROTJ: The duel between Vader and Luke, Vader's turn back to Anakin, and his funeral. But I really love the soft music that gets played in his death scene.

There are so many great scenes and music in the Star Wars movies. It is hard to single out a few. But I will try.

1. TPM : Duel of fates.

2. AOTC : The Imperial march and the clone troopers

3. ANH : When Luke looks at the twin suns, Obiwan's death on the Death Star.

4. ESB : The Imperial march and the entrence of the Executor.

5. ROTJ : The victory scene and music.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.
