OK how would Star Wars turn out if Luke HAD managed to go to the academy he mentioned in A New Hope.

See, I don't think he ever would have. Obi-Wan would hav stopped him before he left. That was one of the purposes of him staying so close to monitor Luke.

Even if Luke got into the acedemy, he would defect to the rebellion along with Darklighter and friends. Unless of course Obi-Wan reaches him and teaches him about the way of the jedi first.

Wouldn't the name Skywalker and the homeplanet Tatooine throw up some alarm bells?

I'm certain that in a civilzation as advanced as this, there are ways to forge Identities and documents.

He wouldn't need to. I think most of such information was destroyed in the Purge.

Since as far as Luke knew he was just some regular guy from a farm, he probably wouldn't have bothered.

Luke's piloting skills would eventually get him noticed. He won't really have a chance to join the Rebelling as it would have been destroyed by the Death Star.

How do you come to this conclusion? If Luke joined the Academy and defected to the Rebellion, he wouldn't have had transported Obi-Wan to the Death Star with Han and Chewie, wouldn't have rescued Leia, wouldn't have gotten Obi-Wan killed, wouldn't have flown out of the Death Star with the homing beacon on it, and wouldn't have led the Death Star back to Yavin IV.

Instead, Leia would have been executed, Han and Chewie would have never met Luke or Obi-Wan, Luke might have been trained as a Jedi, Obi-Wan surely would have survived a lot longer than he did, and the Empire would still have been clueless as to where the Rebels were hiding.
