Because they pretended to be a nice middle of the road conservative party. Not a bunch of Christian Fundamentalist Whackjobs like they really are.Darth Wong wrote:Why did so many people vote for those "Family First" assholes?
Not a single one of their TV ads mentioned their religious ties, nor did they point out their stances on MANY MANY issues. Instead they attacked the other parties/candidates for supporting drug legalisation, abortion and many other things.
All stuff that the average voter may hold a personal, non-religious opinion on and may get suckered by.

Gareth Evans (our foreign minister of the time) is infamous for making a lovely blunder while talking "off-his-face" (kudos to The Late Show) in the presence of reporters. The HK Governors dog had recent gone missing and when asked whether or not he thought the dog would turn up (don't ask me who asked this or why) he made a comment that apparently went something like this: "Of course not. I heard Chairman Deng Xiao-Peng eats a puppy a day".Frank Hipper wrote:What is this "Puppy Joke" that weemadando mentioned?
So, you can imagine how well that went down. Whats even better was the fact that (allegedly - can't find any verified sources) the Chinese Embassies response was along these lines: "His Excellency very much regrets the exaggeration of the Minister -- Chairman Deng is not so greedy. One puppy a week is more than enough for him"
