Fixed! Well... almost, gotta squint to see it now
Played around with the contrast & brightness settings in PowerDVD 5 (Deluxe, build 1203 in case you're wondering, using CLEV) and here's how it looks now... in movie, unedited [except the usual 50% size reduction] pics:
Only thing is now everything is brighter, though it's not too bad.
The matte boxes around ships are visible either way, this doesn't change that (Executor crashing, fighters at the start of the DS2 attack inside, scene of the flaming TIE crashing into an ISD tower, etc.)
So mess around with your set and you might get something similar to the above! At least it looks better than the "original."
For the curious, click below for the settings I used:

Uh...guys...never occured to you all that it might be status quo for lightsabers to have some kind of passage through one another in a limited way when they clash? I see no reason to say otherwise, since a lightsaber appears to be a field effect device rather than a particle device. Fields drop off over distance. Ergo...yeah.
Jeeze For once I agree with Spanky.

Hehe. Spanky's entitled to his of course.
That is a good theory, but then we don't see that in the prequels (or any other times sabers lock for that matter), do we? It's just something we've never seen before or since, so it stands out.
Wow, after watching the OT and TPM dvd,it's quite a contrast how bright and colorful the sabers are in AOTC!
