How come people like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, two great heroes of the Rebellion and New Republic can get around without security details? You'd think, at least on Coruscant, they might get mobbed or have crazed lunatic after them.

Why would they be mobbed?

I mean it's like asking in the height of the Empire, Vader getting mobbed at a parade.

They are military heroes, not celebrities and heck...I don't think I would want to jump any guy who regularly carries a side arm and both are noted pirates.

Mm... if you want regular celebrities, the security actually isn't all that much different from what we have today-- they just have more gadgets, pretty much. In "I, Jedi", Corran talks about when there was a possible kidnapping threat against Siolle Tinta, heir to Tinta Lines (think their equivalent to Paris Hilton-- although probably less anorexic and definitely cuter...). He was picked to stick with her and lay low for a few weeks while CorSec went after the kidnappers; really not that much different from what they'd do nowadays, although one would expect the Rich Young Heiress (TM) to be more of a spoiled brat than Siolle Tinta seems to have been...
