I'm talking about the two guys running for congressman in my district, Jim Matheson and John Swallow. Both of them have run virtually NO political advertisements other than ones that either call the other guy a liar or counter the other guy's claims.
"I wouldn't call it negative," Swallow's campaign manager, Tim Garon, said of the new ad. "I think we've always said we'd run an issue-based campaign. Part of that is talking about Jim Matheson's record."
Oh what bull shit; when your commercial does NOTHING but try to inflame conservatives against Matheson on the abortion issue and you call him Mr. Liberal as a curse, that IS negative campaigning.
I can only hope Swallow loses and doesn't try running again next time.

The WV Gazette printed an article yesterday about the race for WV Supreme Court, calling it "The dirtiest race in the nation".
Considering the ads, yes, it's nasty. The challenger is stating that the incumbent not only cast the deciding vote to allow a child molester on parole, but also suggested the man work as a School Janitor.
The incumbent is denying that he suggested the man work for schools. however, he's accusing the challenger of being an ambulance-chasing lawyer and ten other bad lawyer stereotypes.

Until candidates for office in Utah start trading pipe-bombs and forged documentation of their bona-fides, as occurred when the selection for the High Bishop of the Mormon Church was up for grabs on one occassion, I doubt you could call politics in that state dirty.

I'm still amused by the 'stereotypical smokey, dimly lit poker room' ad, with the plump suited guys with no discernable faces talking about taking over West Virginia. It draws on such ancient stereotypes it makes me chuckle inwardly....
The first time I hear it in a day. The other seventy five times, I get sick of it.

It's Mormon Surpise
I'm not sure what he's talking about, but a while back, there was a documents dealer named Marc Hoffman who sold several false documents to the LDS Church authorities- who bought them because they were supposedly letters showing his strong dabbling in magic about the time when he was supposedly writing the Book of Mormon. Anyway, Hoffman thought he found out that someone figured out that the documents were fake, so he ended up killing two people(one with a pipe bomb) and nearly killing someone else with a pipe bomb before being arrested in his attempt to cover it up.

I remember reading about that. Ingenius scam: cut old paper out of books that dated back to the seventeen-hundreds or so, then mix up ink with the old-fashioned recipe and hand-scribe the document with a copy for reference.
I think that what happened, though, was that people were beginning to get pissed with him for his spending habits - with the money he'd made from his forgeries, he'd indulged a bit more than he could afford to, and he couldn't produce a forgery of another document he'd been given an advance for in time before the other party in question demanded results. In desperation, he made the bombs, wound up killing two people, and subsequently detonated a third bomb when it was sitting on the passenger seat of his car as he was getting ready to deliver it.
After that, the rest is criminal and stupidity history.

Irony for you: Despite being conservative in many ways, West Virginia is heavily Democratic. Senator Byrd, who will hold his seat until he dies(And will retake it if cloned, mark my words) and Rockefeller are Democrats. The Republican candidate for Governer is always called the "Sacrificial Lamb". Though at present, it is leaning towards Bush(He plays the God card alot, and that does it for the locals.).

Mormons are very highly organized, and the Church is capable of mustering more manpower much more quickly than the State government for things like sandbagging against floods, and so on. The church membership is also very highly armed and ordered into wards (a single temple) and stakes (groups of temples). Mormon law requires church members to keep a year's supply of food for their family, and there is a massive bunker structure in the hills to the east of Salt Lake City, which officially houses the sacred church documents (and probably does), but was reputedly actually created to allow the Church elders and a select number of young couples (or just young women...) to shelter during a nuclear attack, guaranteeing the survival of the Church.
Also, in the 70s, during the era of campus rebellion and so on, a demagogue arrived at the University of Utah and began encouraging students to rebel against their elders and burn down their temples. Of course, this being the University of Utah there was not even a riot; but when word got back to the Church Elders they mustered the stakes of Salt Lake City and ten thousand armed men converged on the University. Only a hasty call by the President of the University to the Church elders prevented something rather baddish.
The Temple compound itself is massively fortified and surrounded by heavy walls. Of course, in the early days there was a fort in the hills above where the University of Utah is now, which had artillery sighted in on the Temple complex and stockades for the detention of the Mormon elders. The stockades were still there in WWI and used for housing political dissidents, though the fort has been turned in a combination of museum and housing by now, of course.
I admit that the story about the armed force converging on the UoU is something I only have one reference for--it's an aside in one of the civil defence sections of The Shield of Faith. I will try to confirm it if anyone is curious.

A few decades ago, I'd have agreed with you. Unfortunately, the Mormans have been infiltrated. While the 'church' claims a 70% of the population that is enrolled in the church, the truth is alot of those people are in it because they were enrolled in youth. It is my experience, therefor my opinion, that a vast chunk of the Mormon faith these days is more to do with elitism than the actual faith.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots.
