How would have the Rebels done if they had substituted the craft they were using(Can't remember the name) for, say, F-14's with Tomahawk missiles?
I think if they could get close enough to get a missile shot onto the AT-AT vents they might stand a decent chance.

With a largely underground base in an ultracold environment, how are they supposed to get F-14s into the air at all? Use the rocky snow-covered terrain as a runway?

You want to use cruise missiles, guided by either GPS or terrain mapping, neither of which exists on Hoth, launched by an aircraft that cannot carry them, to hit a several-foot-wide moving target at spitting distance?Guardsman Bass wrote:I think if they could get close enough to get a missile shot onto the AT-AT vents they might stand a decent chance.
Please lay off the crack.

A more sensible choice would be to use Harriers, which are designed to be used in rough field conditions. As for their armament, Hellfires or Mavericks are designed to attack armoured targets. Though I seriously doubt that they'd even scratch the armor.

Building a runway on Hoth would be easy provided a sufficient area could be found that didn't have any crevices in the ice. Just smooth it down with bulldozers and by pouring water onto low points, then drop down aluminum matting. It the sort of thing we could do in a couple days with existing technology. Catapults and or JATO gear along with arresting wires, three things also found in existing airstrip construction equipment, could also be used to significantly reduce the area needed.Darth Wong wrote:With a largely underground base in an ultracold environment, how are they supposed to get F-14s into the air at all? A stick of heavy bombs from Harriers or far more ideally a much heavier aircraft, and F-111 with all its pylons fitted would be nice, might blast big enough craters in the ice to knock one or two Walkers over though. It would probably slow them down at the least.Cpl Kendall wrote:A more sensible choice would be to use Harriers, which are designed to be used in rough field conditions. Since when do F-14s carry tomahawks? Since when can they even carry tomahawks? Since when are tomahawks even capable of tracking and attacking a moving target? Ye gods, I don't know what kind of F-14s and Tomahawks you invisage the rebels using, but they sure ain't anything like the tomahawks and F-14s in use by the real US military.Guardsman Bass wrote:How would have the Rebels done if they had substituted the craft they were using(Can't remember the name) for, say, F-14's with Tomahawk missiles?

I mean tomahawks need tercom data prepared over weeks or months by detailed satelite study of the route. You can't just point and lock 'em like a sidewinder and let fly.
Look, if you want to substitute modern forces for the rebels and give them a reasonable chance, forget this insane and impossible F-14/Tomahawk combo. Go with the nuclear shells the US army fielded during the cold war. At least those was known to actually work. And if it must be an aircraft, then let it be an AC-130, because I think it has a gun that could actually fire those rounds.
F-14s with Tomahawks... the mental image almost made me ruin the keyboard when I tried to think about it.. the thing would be almost the size of an F-14, can you even imagine the sight of it? I think the F-14's landing gear wouldn't even touch the ground, it'd be sitting on the missile with its wheels dangling! Never mind trying to fly with it.
