It's 40 kiloWatt range. Ref: T2: Infiltrator.

The times it has been said to be a mere 40 Watt range are typos.
Inside the reaction chamber of the weapon, a form of vacuum channel is vaporised through either water or hydrogen gas by a laser beam in the blue-green range of the spectrum. This causes a small amount of hydrogen to heat tremendously until each hydrogen nucleus is stripped of its electrons (the hydrogen is ionised). The hydrogen in this high-energy state is then bundled together into a 'bolt' by magnetic induction technology and released from the reaction chamber as a blast of plasma. The plasma (heated to several million Kelvin) leaves the weapon's muzzle with a speed of about 10 million kilometres per hour to reach its target.
On impact, the kinetic energy of the plasma bolt is disrupted into a massive explosion, covering several meters. The extremely high temperature of the plasma bolt means that it can pass through thick armour, and is also capable of super-heating the fluids of a living body to such temperature as to cause the skin and flesh to be ripped apart in the resulting steam explosion. On reaching their target, plasma bolts can explode into fireballs dealing damage to everyone within the blast radius.
Additonally, I like the idea of a monomolecular, poison Shurikan launcher, the chainsaw that WH40k guys use, Knife Missiles, the LawGiver Mk. II, Lightsabre, CFC gun (opens hole in ozone above target and watch as it burns from solar rays), Nuclear powered gatling flechette launcher, LPP-91, the Seven Second weapon (nanites go into body and spread throughout bloodstream in 7 seconds and can explode for any desired result from arm blown off to total body popping) and many more weapons I can't think of right now.

Really, the Lazy Gun from Against a Dark Background tops them all.

Also now I think of it, the monomolecular fullerene whip in Johnny Mnemonic is cool too, as it the Steyr TMP-in-a-briefcase used in Ghost in the Shell.

Reason. In the end, *everyone* listens to Reason.

(For those of you who haven't read Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, Reason is a gatling-railgun, shooting 2mm ammo at devastatingly high speeds: enough to seperate the top half of a large yacht from the bottom half and enough to blow a Phalanx CIWS right off of the carrier it was mounted on.)

Hyper-rifles and warp grenades. As has already been said, a hyper-rifle shoots a beam which translates anything in the path of the beam into hyperspace. Cuts through anything not protected by a suppresser. A warp grenade is basically the same, it dumps a 5-6 meter sphere into hyperspace. Nast, nasty weapons.

yeah warhammer 40k really lost the grittiness it first possesed as well as the dark humour guess the 13 year olds couldnt get it
might not be overly effective but my favourite conceptual weapon was the harlequins kiss a melee weapon that expelled a couple of metres of monofilament wire that liquified your oponents internal organs when you jammed into whichever of his orifices was most readily accessible

I perfer from the Dune, the portal force Field generator, that negates all energy, projectile weapons, but allow hand to hand combat... wonder how it would fair against a light Saber...

How about this for a sci-fi bullet. A 12-mm round with a cubic centimeter or two of with fissionable uranium. Normally, this amount of uranium is subcritical mass and can't explode, but I heard that the University of Pennsylvania was working on a way to fission uranium with a few nanograms of antimatter for a nuclear propulsion system. If you could miniturize the size of the magnetic trap for the antimatter, you could get an explosion with a yield of couple of dozen tons of TNT (if the basic concept works).

Either Reason, listed above, or the Blaster from Apocalypse Troll, aslo listed above. I believe the blaster has firepower in the kilo-ton range. In other words, stuff goes boom.

in the low kiloton range, but tightly focused, and thus much more useful against heavy armor then the mere numbers suggest.

My favorite is one of my own design; the Obsidian Anti-Personnel Cannon. It fires up to 10,000 rounds per second; the rounds being extremely small monofilament flechettes.

ACS Grav Rifle

Fires 3mm depleted uranium bullets that use a matter anti-matter reaction instead of gunpowder, exist the barrel doing c-fractional velocities (if you don't hit anything with this puppy the round will break orbit and just keep going) and to top it all off it's got a 500 round/sec ROF :)
