It's not hard if the teacher is male. There is a huge double standard that I have noticed in whether or not a teacher gets in trouble, mostly based on a distrust of male teachers. I have heard from my tutoring students about female teachers who really abuse their power (like throwing out a student's assignments so she can give him a bad grade) and still don't lose their jobs, but male teachers are not trusted at all. I know one who lost his job because he mentioned being from Texas in the classroom and some parent decided that he was being political. It was a social studies class..

I can attest to that. A group of students at my school conspired to have the chemistry teacher sacked by pressing false harassment charges. I was in the room at the time of the alleged incident. He didn't do a thing. I went and attested to this fact to the administration, they nodded and smiled politely, then threw him out on his ass anyway. The replacement was a total incompetent, and a woman. She's still there.

At Berkeley, I knew a guy who was in a Japanese elementary school (he was a student then) when his teacher brought out a couple of beakers full of acid and threw it at the children. This guy is completely blind now, unable to speak properly, and his face is a discolored mass of scar tissue.
Until I heard his story, I just assumed that he had been napalmed in Vietnam or something, that's how bad the damage was.

So, yeah, there have been crazy teacher rampages.

I've had shit like this happen a lot. My old elementry school, P.S. 196 had an incident were a teacher was arrested for throwing a chair at a second grader; it was some fat-ass guy. Then in my junior high school, I.S. 240, a girl started attacking the male science teacher who was a very thin frail guy. He did try to defend himself. I had to write in defense of him because some people were talking about how he was hitting at her but left out the part of it being in self defense. High school a bunch of shit happened but one that I clearly remember is the security guard getting beat up by a bunch of students and he had to go to the hospital. He was back in a week with a neck brace.

Okey, updates I just found out:
First incident was in a development town, bunch of kids did not let class happen, one of them got explelled, he took a garbage bag, filled it with water, and dive-bombed his teacher, shes in medium condition (Slang for "Life support needed").
Second incident was in the Golan, religious groupies, arsoned a teachers car.

Because then teachers will have to have their sex with students in the bathrooms like everyone else.

No problem; simply fund the endeavour by cutting costs in the Art and Science departments. SOP. What's that? You like music? Tough shit, you monster, the principal needs a new car.

You can buy half decent "spy" cameras off eBay for <AU$50 (<US$37.5). Really, all up, it'll probably cost the schools hell of a lot less in legal cost if they have video evidence when "Something Bad" happens.

You remember when they tried it a few years ago here?

They put a camera in the bathroom, and one of the senior students complained to the press. The school's response was that he should pay more attention to his grades than his classmates liberties.

So one crippled his teacher and the other merely destroyed his teacher's financial health? Sounds like more than just "being rude."

From the classes I have taken, this issue has actually come up pretty often. The problem lies not with the teachers--many of whom (especially the male ones) would support this--but the parents of the children. Angry parents kept this tactic from going into effect into some Special Ed and "last chance" schools in OC when it otherwise would have been implemented.

As I said, I wasn't aware of those facts before.

Still, reason for a strike? :?

Hell yes! If your professional work places you in that kind of unecessary danger, you have every right to go on strike. In this case, it even sounds like they did it properly by going on strike for only a short amount of time to make a point without seriously jeopardizing the educations of the students.

Okey, I should look for updates on the subject, but its all overshadowed by politics.

Ossus, though while they did one strike professionally, I wish they stopped striking what seems to be all the time over pay.
I know the situation is crumby, but you don't see the police force striking.

Well I might not be the most unbiased observer...you see, I have this fear of having heavy things dropped on my head or my long term financial investments torched. But I would say, yes, this is a good reason to strike.

If you can't feel safe in the classroom you can't teach children anyway.

That's largely because police forces have direct political access to municipal resources, and in fact the police chief usually serves on municipal councils. If the situation is that dangerous then you should strike just to get your message out, and BTW if there are multiple police officers killed in a small town (or even a big city) within a short amount of time, you'd better believe that the police force would be doing something about it.

Guy named Lancaster back at my high school, was a history teacher and football coach. He was known to drag problem students bodily to the front of the room, then throw them out of class. So, er, pardon me if I giggle at the 'men get in trouble' position.

Coach Lancaster was a major fruitcake in all respects, too. Actually went on at an assembly about it taking 'ten good Christians to destroy one evil non-Christian.' Direct quote, there. I almost died trying not to laugh, as I (the atheist) was sitting between Random (the Jew) and Justin (the who /knows/ what). Almost asked 'Alright, you got thirty good Christians on hand?'

If you mean Glen Eira College (a suburban Melbourne high school), where the cameras caught something like 11 students messing with drugs... I was going school there at the time, LOL!

Cyran, only for first period, it was kinda fun arriving late, but not worth it by listening to their rants every class about the subject.
