the price is not the point if you already have one of these programms.
The point IS if he has the money TO Afford these Programs money likely is no object and/or he's a fiflth weasel(IE downloaded a Warz) in which case I would advise him to vigiruously wash his computer with soap and water
no, he might be a poor student who bought max instead of a car and now has only got $500 left.

and, as i said, there are several free programms which are equal in eating recources.

Yadda Yaddaa Yadda the point is your brining up a specific set of Programs and frankly how many people Mess with 100k Polgyon Models? Or Maniuplate three hours of Video Footage at the same time?

first off, stay the fuck away from the ATI cards, their drivers get into everything and are klunky as fuck, the cards (to my current knowledge) cannot really be overclocked... second, intel sucks

here's what i'm getting in my next comp, which may be pretty soon:

AMD AthlonXP 2300+
512MB DDR 2700
100GB WD HDD
128MB Geforce4 Ti4200 with composite out (oc'd of course)
ASUS A7Vxxx mainboard (dunno which one i'd get, there's a shitload of this series out there)
DVD drive
Plextor CD/RW (if i can afford it)

*i may settle for an 80GB drive though...

i´ll agree with you if he doesnt want to use stuff like that. but if he does he´d better get loads of ram.
you dont mess with a single model with 100k polygons but if you set up a complete scene, say a landscape with a bunch of trees. do you know how many fucking leave only one tree has? and every leaf has 2 polys.

at the moment i´m modelling a human. the head (that is without ears and hair) alone has got over 10k, and it´s already a pain in the ass to rotate the thing.

ATI cards can be overclocked. They don't have as much headroom as nVidia cards, though. The drivers are improving - and I've found the Detonators can be quite unstable as well.

XP Home is a piece of crap. Go with XP Professional or 2000 Professional.

I was merely making a small point (apparently wrong), not endorsing it.

Yes sure the fact they have LEAKED, BETA Drivers and you find them unstable, suuure

ATI is decent but it just does not have anywhere close when it comes to NVIDA's driver actiecture

Thats the beatuity of NVIDA's Drivers however is that they contiunly update them over and over and over agian

Since I got my first GEFORCE 2 GTS it has jumped an avarage of 15-26 frame-rates in every single game comparing Two month Drives(Drivers two months after the realse of the card, tradtinaoly the most stable when all the bugs are worked out) to Present Date Dentoator Drivers

That and Nvidia like Linux has an intesntly loyal fanbase

If you jump SIX times in "Deer Hunter II" and the game crashs, trust that the problem will be know within two weeks and fixed within three

I'm talking about the WHQL-certified drivers straight from nVidia's website. I don't mess around with leaked betas.

Irrelevant. You made a blanket statement that nothing out there will consume even 256MB. That blanket statement is quite false.

A lot of people are into 3D these days and hgh-polycount models are a lot more common than you seem to think. Given these facts 256MB isn't unreasonable.

I've had a geforce2mx since the week it came out, I haven't pissed about overclocking it and I've stuck with stable driver versions. I've had no problems at all even with el cheapo hardware for the rest of my components.

Not quite, I said and later re-explained myself that in Windows 98 Anything greater than 256 Megs is wasted as I have had 512 Megs of Ram in every computer I built after my Celerons and consistantly anything over 256 Megs in Windows 98 simply is not used

He uses Windows 98 Thus anything more than 256 Megs is a waste and why I said that to Salm about don't bother with that Gig of Ram as Salm was suggesting

But back to the main topic at hand have you made up your mind yet?
