LCD Monitor recomendations

Post by Alyeska »

I need a recomendation for a godo 17" LCD monitor. I am a serious gamer so it can't have crap quality. I am also looking for a price range of around $300.

If your a serious game why are you looking for a LCD? Besides that a 17inch lcd that cost around 300usd will probably be not that great for gaming. If you are able to find one. ( no I don't doubt that you couldn't ) I'd suggest a 19inch CRT.

I already have a 19" CRT (true flat) crowding my desk. I know you loose a little quality on LCDs, but from what I've seen the newer LCDs look pretty damned sweet. When I watched a movie on one recently I saw no ghosting problems to speak of.

The more expensive displays (Apple and a few other brands that I forget the name of) have high refresh rate, but those aren't in the range you're looking for. (note to anti-Apple people: I'm not recommending the 17" Apple display in any way- its ADC instead of DVI, and a bit overpriced). A $300 17" would have crap quality though. You'd be more likely to find a good quality 15" for $300.

One word : Don't.

I bought a 19" Samsung LCD monitor because the dealer was a friend who gave me a massive discount. Only later did I realize that the screen refresh rate simply will not support anything beyond 75 Hertz, which is definitely crappy when it comes to serious, plus its hard on the eyes, so I exchanged it for a higher-end model with a better refresh rate - Which didn't really do diddly squat.

Long story short, I switched my office monitor with my home monitor. :(

If you're into serious gaming, stick with the CRT's. It takes up more space, but at least my eyes don't hurt so much after 3-4 hours on Doom 3.

Refresh rate (in terms of the classical Hz) is irrelevant for LCDs. CRTs must redraw their entire screen on each refresh cycle, but LCDs only have to update the relevant pixels that have changed. What you need to check is the time to refresh individual pixels. Look for a screen with 16ms refresh. There are ones slower, but they have inferior color fidelity.

Screens with DVI interfaces are better since they don't have to go through two analog-digital conversions.

Thus, if you screen has a 16ms refresh rate -- corresponding to 62.5Hz, it is absolutely useless to go above ~60Hz.

For $300, though, I doubt you'll be able to find a good display.

BS, outside the price issue, today you have 17inch monitors with less then 25ms average refresh rate, which gives you NO ghosting.

I bring it up, because OUTSIDE of price, you have great LCD's for gaming, at NOT outragous prices, with around 400$ for a 19inch quality LCD.

But the 17" ones with that refresh rate are generally a lot more than $300. $300 would give you a good 15".
