I would say that it is their election to win. The consequences of Bush's economic and foreign policies are going to come back to bite him on the ass with a vengeance if he doesn't do anything about them during the next four years, and they will carry over to the 2008 Republican candidate. It all depends on how well the Democrats assess what went wrong in 2004 and on what steps they take to fix it.Trogdor wrote:Anyone think the democrats will be able to retake the white house in 2008? I personally have no idea.

Dramatic and corny because it's powerful and sincere. Never be ashamed.Zed Snardbody wrote:I fear that I will never again see an election for my nations leader decided in one night as it has been done in my fathers time.
I fear that this election has brought about the death of the American democracy.
When I wake up tomorrow, my President will not be decided by the vote of the people, but by the army of lawyers that the two parties have seen fit to bring forth.
For the next four years I will see my nation descend further into the hellish field of partisan politics where we no longer look upon each other as citizens, but as liberal or conservative, as coward or war monger, as traitor and idiot.
I will see people who have lost faith in democracy and the principles of the nation, they will not be able to accept the leader of our nation because he will not be chosen by ballot, but by lawyer.
I see now that in this age, it is to much to ask for a simple answer.
Tonight, we will never see a gentleman’s concession again.
Tonight, I watched part of my nation die.
---
Its dramatic yes, But right now its how I feel. Finally people care, they vote, and this is the result.
When the dust settles will the defeated really accept the winner if that winner is chosen by lawyer or a court, and not by the people?
I reiterate what I said in another thread... political parties are machines designed for the function of getting votes and win elections, just as businesses are machines for making money.
One cannot expect them to have principles, or firm ideals. They only adhere to them under duress, as much as the voters will force them to have.

The Governator would, I think, if the US constituion was amended to allow it.

I will fight to keep this nation that I love a democracy, and it shall not die so long as I have the will to save it.

That won't matter, unless he pulls in about 95% of what is traditionally a strong Republican showing. The Dude wrote:CBS is reporting that the total number of provisional ballots is about 130,000 - which may end up being less than the margin of victory in Ohio at the end of the night.

They could, but will they? I've heard McCain said he didn't want to try again.UCBooties wrote:Toss up, personaly, I want McCain/Powell.Trogdor wrote:Anyone think the democrats will be able to retake the white house in 2008? I personally have no idea.
And Zed, while things look bleak, I'd advise less pessimism. The presidency has been a joke before. America will survive four more years of Bush, worse for the wear but still intact. All we really need is one great hero that everyone thinks is just the man for the job of president. Have faith, America has seen shitty times similar to this before and gotten through it.
And with that, I say goodnight to you all. Hopefully, Ohio will no longer be purple when I awaken.

It's been pretty clear for at least two hours that Ohio most likely won't be going to Kerry.JME2 wrote:Good, good. If Kerry can take Ohio and Wisconsin, he'll win by two votes. If Bush gets Iowa, New Mexico, and Nevada, he'll still be two votes short. Ladies and gentlemen, we still have a chance!

We do, but its a slim one. Who knows? All could turn out well. Im not going to say a damn thing until the provisional ballots are counted in 11 days. But Im feeling pretty sick right about now. How did it happen...?JME2 wrote:Good, good. If Kerry can take Ohio and Wisconsin, he'll win by two votes. If Bush gets Iowa, New Mexico, and Nevada, he'll still be two votes short. The estimate for provisional ballots is around 130k. Kerry would have to pull well over 90% of them. And they traditionally tend Republican.Bugsby wrote:We do, but its a slim one. Who knows? Screwy as it seems, the Electoral College is the only thing that can save the day at this point. Get enough of Bush's electors to go to Kerry to bring Bush down to 269, or better yet McCain. That gives it to Kerry in the first instance, or sends it to the House in the second, where the Democrats would be forced to join with Republican moderates to put McCain in rather than Kerry, who cannot win in the House.

That will never happen. Rogue electors are uber-rare; you could count the amount of them throughout American history on your hands.
