Former mayor Marion Barry (D) last night capped yet another revival of a long and often turbulent political career, easily winning election to the District Council as the representative from the city's poorest neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River.

Enough Said. Some choice Barry quotes:

"The contagious people of Washington have stood firm against diversity during this long period of increment weather."

"I am making this trip to Africa because Washington is an international city, just like Tokyo, Nigeria or Israel. As mayor, I am an international symbol. Can you deny that to Africa?'

"I promise you a police car on every sidewalk."

"What right does Congress have to go around making laws just because they deem it necessary?"

"If you take out the killings, Washington actually has a very, very low crime rate."

For most of his life, actually. The deal is that the electorate in every part of the District votes Democratic. If you can secure their nomination (by whatever means possible) you don't even have to campaign, you just ride the vote into office. DC was 90% for Kerry yesterday. That's the sort of margin you expect Tumbleweed, Texas to go for Bush. Insane.

This sort of thing happens all the time. Shep is just fishing for way to assuage the subconscious guilt at having voted a straight Republican ticket--no doubt entering the polling place in hunting camo, breathing heavily through the mouth and drooling. The Vandals are at the gates, and they have the vote!
