Darth Wong wrote:You don't even know what the word "reactionary" means, do you?
Are you saying that running away somehow moves forward political progress? If so, I would like to understand how removing your voice does anything to advance the progress of politics.
Who said the goal of leaving was to accomplish something other than getting fed up and deciding that it's not going to change? Why do you insist on trying to force everyone else's motives to fit into your pidgeonholed versions thereof?
There's a difference between what one person's goals might be and what the results of the actions to achieve said goals produce. Case in point, this election. Some people wanted to accomplish keeping Bush in power in order to make this nation better. But does the end result match the desired goal?
If it means that at least half the country has values which are abhorrent to you, why wouldn't you be happier elsewhere? One cannot agree that it's OK to seek happiness while simultaneously insisting that they should not flee from unhappiness.
Do you claim to know specifically why these people voted for Bush? You can guess and you can ponder, but this is no different than looking at Kerry's voting record in the Senate. You can't just look at the vote, you have to look at the reasons behind the vote. Moreover, you have to look at the people who didn't vote, to find out why they weren't motivated. Saying something akin to "Bush won because of all the fucking rednecks" isn't looking at the whole picture. Bush won for a multitude of reasons, several of which can be worked with in future elections.
No doubt some of the people saying they'll leave are just being whiny and have no intention of actually doing it. For those people, feel free to go ahead and flame. But if someone actually puts his money where his mouth is and leaves, there is nothing wrong with that.
Well, like I've said, if people have legitimate reasons for leaving, I have nothing bad to say to them. To the people who are bitching and moaning (especially after having spent the last several months on the "get out and vote" kick), my original statement stands.
Do not meddle in the affairs of insomniacs, for they are cranky and can do things to you while you sleep.

John Ashcroft. That about sums it up. He's witchhunted before Bush, yes, but with the flexibility he has enjoyed and now the approval of the nation, yes, I feel I have a legitimate fear. It's not a 'RUN FOR THE GODDAMN BORDER!' fear, but it's certainly wiping away any reason I have to stay if I get a better offer elsewhere. It'd be nice if you read what I posted instead of lumping me into the 'Flee for your freedom!' brigade, as I said simply that I'm more likely to take a job offer elsewhere instead of sitting it out here. But hey. I'm not expecting reason and sanity the next few days, from anyone.

Then good luck, and I wish you well. I honestly hope it doesn't come to that, but hey, if it does, and you do need help, seriously, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I wasn't attempting to paint you as part of the "run for the goddamn border" brigade, and I don't think I implied that in my response. If I did somehow, I do apologize.

Well, Canada is great but there is just not enough room for everyone who lives in the US to come here :P :P

Besides, it will still affect you and your family so why run?

Edit: Message was aimed at anyone who was considering coming to Canada.

Whenever I read those novels or saw movies that American ex-patriots living in other countries (most famously France) I always wondered "What the fuck is that all about?"

Now I have a pretty damned good idea.

It's what I saw in your statement of 'Fleeing the country'. If it wasn't meant as that, I apologize for jumping. I quite honestly am feeling some fear here, and it's all the more surreal for it being for living in America.

Which reminds me of something from work:

I'm a tech in a one hour photo lab and we send alot of our film out to Kodak for higher quality processing. Kodak isn't doing to well lately and has been closing lots of their labs including one that was practically next door for 30 years. So of course a customer mentions it one day and says how sad it is and then asks me if I'm old enough to vote. "Oh God" I think, "she's not gonna say what I think she's going to say, is she?" Sure enough when I said yeah, her response is, "good then you know who to vote for right? They had been there 28 years"

Never mind that people are using more and more digital cameras and less 35mm. No, the blame must fall on everyone's favorite anti-christ. Once again, for fucks sake.
Strange! here in sweden the labs are doing well becose of the digicams. they are doing pirints from digital media.

Then leave, why be an attension whore about it. If you're going to do it, just do it. I agree with Hotfoot here, this has become the 'war screech' of the loosing side (no matter what the party) for the last three or so cycles and as of yet, I don't know of a single person who has said it and then done it.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. I was considering moving out of the country before, so it's not big stretch that I want to leave that much sooner now. However, if Bush makes some sort of attempt to do away with the 2-term limit and is successful, I'm out of here. I don't want to be part of his empire.

His next tatic wil be to ask for Emergency Powers after the next terrorist attack, and there will be one. Then he will declare his party the only legal party and so on and so forth.

Serriously it may sound like cripping from a sore loser, I am. But this is fucking crazy. I remember 4 years ago thinking, hey it's ok i'm sure he'll do his term and fuck off like the joke he is, i'm sure many German Jews felt the same about a certain Adolf Hitler. The huge difference is America isn't commign out of a depression of a war that crippled it. America right now is big and bold and now exactly shy of throwing it's weight around.

Colin if it does get that bad i have a room for ya mate.

Haha, I'm at work right now, and my friend/co-worker Rick just came into my room. He asked how I was, and I said I was sad about the elections, and he said, "Don't even get me started" and walked out. Then he poked his head back in and said, "Canada's got a one-year waiting period before Americans are allowed to immigrate, so that gives me exactly 365 days to pack."
