Arafat in intensive care due to sudden deterioration in health
By Ze'ev Schiff, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Reuters

The health of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat seriously deteriorated Wednesday night.
He was placed in an intensive-care unit at the French military hospital where he is being treated.

Arafat was flown to France for treatment last Friday after his health worsened.

The sudden deterioration came a few hours after Leila Shahid, the Palestinians' permanent envoy to Paris, reiterated that doctors carrying out tests on Arafat in the suburb of Clamart, southwest of Paris, had ruled out leukemia or any other form of cancer and said his health was improving.

"We are happy that his health is getting better." she said. "Now we have to continue the examinations to find the reason for his general fatigue and the weakness of his blood. But I think we are going in the right direction."

Arafat says he hopes Bush will adopt new peace policy
Arafat hopes United States President George W. Bush will adopt a new "policy of peace" in the Middle East, an aide said on Wednesday.

Shahid told LCI television in Paris she was worried by the prospect of a second term for Bush because he had conducted what she called a policy of war.

"I think that, like all Palestinians, he [Arafat] is waiting to see what President Bush is going to do to revert to a policy of peace rather than a policy of war," Shahid said as television network projections showed Bush edging towards victory.

"I am worried because President Bush has for four years been in charge of the American administration that has conducted a policy of war more than a policy of peace and which decided to put the peace process in a freezer for the last four years."

She added: "What worries me is that in this second term the desire to see a new American president, a new government continuing the peace process is not being fulfilled."

Shahid said there was a big difference between Bush and his Democratic challenger John Kerry on foreign policy but did not say elaborate.

Aides said on Tuesday that Arafat was followin the election but had refused to be drawn on whether he preferred Bush or Kerry.

The U.S. has tried to freeze the Palestinian leader out of the picture in the Middle East conflict.

Israel accuses Arafat of fomenting violence in an uprising that began in 2000, something Arafat denies.

One of the docs or nurses must've been a deep-cover Israeli agent.

Personally I hope his death is extremely painful. It'll be payback for all the innocent lives him and his cronies have taken.

Damn, if he dies then Sharon's work will be that much easier. The Palestinians might be caught in a power struggle until it's too late to do anything about his initiatives.

You may get that wish. If he's got septicaemia, it may not be a comfortable last few days if this is the end.

I don't wish to see any human suffer, not even Arafat. I'm glad though that he'll be taken out of the I/P situation permanently. Even if by some chance he survives, I hope they take him out of the picture.

Reuters wrote:PARIS (Reuters) - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat was in a coma and in critical condition in the intensive care unit at a French military hospital on Thursday after his health suddenly deteriorated, aides said.

They said doctors carrying out tests on the 75-year-old leader since he was airlifted to France last Friday still did not know what was wrong with him, despite ruling out leukemia.

"Arafat is in a coma and in a critical condition," a senior Palestinian official told Reuters. Aides had earlier said he was in serious condition in the unit where he was moved on Wednesday at around 5 p.m. (11 a.m. EST).

A briefing by the hospital had been expected at 11 a.m. (5 a.m. EST) but was put off without any explanation.

"New tests have been carried out including an endoscopy (visual internal examination). Nothing was found out from those tests," a senior aide said earlier on Thursday.

Arafat, for decades a symbol of the Palestinian struggle with Israel for a state, was rushed to France from the West Bank last Friday with severe stomach pains, diarrhea and vomiting.

Arafat's slide into illness has raised fears of chaos among Palestinians locked in a 4-year-old uprising, and the death of a leader Israel and Washington see as an obstacle to peace could shuffle the cards in the Middle East conflict.

The French doctors said on Tuesday that Arafat was responding to treatment although aides said the Palestinian leader could remain in the hospital in a southwestern Paris suburb for several more weeks.

The doctors did not immediately comment on Arafat's latest condition.

I don't recall seeing anyhwere that it's septicemia, and from what I hear, this is not an acute disorder, rather a chronic one. I was thinking more along the lines of end-stage histiocytoma...though septicemia may be a side effect of his chronic condition.

I read it somewhere, but you may be right. I've not been keeping up-to-date on this guy anyway.

Damn, if he dies there isn't anyone those fundies will even slightly listen to. Arafat is the last hope for peace in that region.

As if the fundies even gave a shit about him anyway. It's not like he actively tried hard enough to stop most of the bloodshed. But don't worry. When he dies - and he will someday - there will be a small scuffle over power and then another radical will take his place and either reverse the peace process or do what Arafat did. Fuck all.
