So, how are people dealing with the election results?

Me, I'm sitting here, typing up the next chapter of The Best of Both Worlds and taking ocassional breaks to watch AOTC.

Working all day. Having life decide that it hasn't been enough of a bitch and shitting on me a little more. Trying not to think about it. Failing, as work is SLOW so I've got little to do but hang out on SDN, which defeats the purpose. Aargh.

Used the invincibility cheat on Shattered Universe, turning it into a strategy-less killfest. I do that whenever I'm pissed at something...or feel like killing Klingons.

Hehe...I do the same thing with Naval Campaigns Tsushima and Jutland, except there aren't any invincibility codes for them.

I'm having a hard time believing it's actually OVER. Despite the concession speech, I can't help but think that something's going to pop up in the next few days and cause a complete shitstorm. Thank god it's over, and it better stay over for the next four fucking years.

I'm trying not to pay attention to gloating republicans on other message boards I visit. I'm trying to think of ways the democrats can recover from this blow. I'm thinking about what Bush will unleash in a second term.

I guess I'm also trying NOT to think about it. This loss hurts, and hurts bad. For a long time I had faith that americans, once it became clear that Bush is a fool, would turn on him. That wasn't the case, and it's been hard to come to grips with the reality that I simply don't have that much in common with 51% of the country.

Americans have a false sense of national security and civility. We tend to look at the world from a viewpoint of "our side of the pond, versus everybody else on the other side of the pond". I think geography goes a long way in giving Americans a sense of isolation that might have been a reality a century ago, but no longer holds up to the current realities of globalization and integration.

I think it's important to note that America has never had to suffer through a home-grown dictatorship in its political history like virtually every other country in the world. Americans have never truly been politically repressed by their own. I think that generates a certain naivete among citizens who don't share a collective history of repression at the hands of their own government. While you can certainly argue that some Presidencies have been more authortarian than others, the American system has overall been characterized by it's democratic qualities and not it's repressive qualities. This creates a weird kind of civility between Americans that pretty much says, "as long as he/she/it is American, he/she/it is better than anything else in the world".

I tried not to think too much of it. Although, I'm kind of happy the shit-slinging campaign is over and the seemingly inevitable lawsuits and recounts in battleground states never happened.

The great thing about America is that the next day after the election most of us just go about our lives. I went to work, got stressed over the workload just like most days. Then I came home to relax like any other day. No riots, no fires, no shootings. Although I did poke fun at one of my Republican co-workers a bit.

Alright, guys, I'm not a mod, but as the thread creator, I ask this: While I appreciate posting your feelings on the election, this thread was not created as a venting for frustrations. It is meant to describe, discuss, and teach coping skills and how to realx in light of the 2004 Election results. If you want to post your feelings on Bush, please use the threads in HOS and NP or IM/PM.

Thanks guys.

The key, as I find it, is to surround yourself with the familiar, to become one with your natural environment (yes, you can count porn surfing under that  ) In this case, I simply sit in a comfortable position in regards to my desk, my keyboard on my lap and spilling out the text of chapter 19 of The Best of Both Worlds, a nice, chilled glass of mineral water in front of me, and John Williams playing through my headphones (the track in question is Bounty Hunter's Pursuit from AOTC).

The only way I can cope with American politics anymore. Apathy drives engaged. I did my part. I got out and voted, and was summarily silenced by the rabid mob. I'm running out of reasons to care. I can preoccupy myself with my upcoming trip to Michigan, or lose myself in one of the myriad digital worlds I actually frequent more often than Earth.

And cartoons, lots and lots of cartoons. And porn. Sometimes both.

You merely don't have that much in common with 51% of the 2004 electorate. But consider: the last census put the population of the United States at around 295 million. Estimates are that the 110 million voters who turned out for this election constituted 60% of eligible voters, which would number around 183 million.

Bush was elected by 56 million people; constituting only 19% of the total U.S. population —which includes of course children and all non-voting, non-working adults, but considering all these numbers helps put things in perspective.

You, like myself, merely have little in common with 1/5th of the country —or a little under 1/3rd of all eligible voters.
