Bumblefuck USA and National Security
One thing that struck me about the reasons my brothers in the red states were voting for Bush (laughable moral issues aside) was that they felt 'safer' with GWB. Now I ask you, does a hick in Idaho, Nebraska, Utah, The Dakotas, Wyoming really have to worry about Al-Qaeda or any terrorist attack for that matter. 9/11 was NYC and Washington DC, the Twin Towers bombings were NYC. In Osamma's tape one word clearly needed no translation - Manhattan.
I think that the folks who actually live in target areas would be a much better barometer of how safe we should feel. Somehow I don't see Wichita Kansas having to worry about planes flying into their tall buildings (does Wichita even HAVE tall buildings)
So I'm more than a bit skeptical of their gauges of how safe we are when I'm literally at Ground Zero.

The safety issue is just a smokescreen for their basic tribal mentality. The point is that he is handling foreign affairs exactly the way THEY would, so he's one of them and that means he's better.

I disagree. 2 or 3 terrorist attacks in say. Tulsa and Fargo and Pueblo and it shuts the country down.. It would be much worse over all then 9-11 even if the death toll was lowerStravo wrote:One thing that struck me about the reasons my brothers in the red states were voting for Bush (laughable moral issues aside) was that they felt 'safer' with GWB. Sudden power is apt to be insolent, sudden liberty saucy; that behaves best which has grown gradually.

Look at how the DC sniper case got people in an uproar. And that was two guys with rifle.theski wrote:I disagree. 2 or 3 terrorist attacks in say. Excellent. A little too uniform for my tastes (couldn't they have come up with at least one non-blonde?), but they're hot nonetheless.frigidmagi wrote:Well if we're going to ask questions, I'll present evidence has to what they're fucking

Our tallest building is the official National Bumblefuck Center. Or so that's what I'm told. It can't be over 100m high.Stravo wrote:I think that the folks who actually live in target areas would be a much better barometer of how safe we should feel. But hey, at least we have enough planes per building to level the city flat.
Yes, "bombing Iraq" = "safer rural communities" is the average mentality around here.Darth Wong wrote:The safety issue is just a smokescreen for their basic tribal mentality. The point is that he is handling foreign affairs exactly the way THEY would, so he's one of them and that means he's better.
Based on the local news, Moral Values seems to be the most important factor for voters here, though.
Interestingly enough, when the topic comes up, people felt "safe" during the Cold War ("Who would want to bomb us?") yet are terrified of potential terrorist attacks. Never mind that McConnell AFB, missle silos, and aircraft manufacturing made us a priority target for the Soviet Union, none of which terrorists with limited resources give a fuck about.

Sounds like Stravo was watching The Daily Show last night. Stephen Colbert had a brilliant little bit regarding this subject.
STEWART: But Stephen, here in New York, where terrorism is undoubtedly a more real concern, people overwhelmingly went for Kerry. Why'd people in states like South Dakota go for Bush?
COLBERT: Well Jon, you see, here in New York, we're too close to terrorism and gays. We're so caught up in the middle of everything that we can't make a clear decision. Only when you're further out, like in South Dakota and Oklahoma, can you see the big picture on terrorism and homosexuals and make a good decision. So, on behalf of all the blue states, I would like to thank the red states for saving us ... from ourselves.
