20% of the gay vote went to Bush???
Now, I've come across some incredibly inconsistant arguments for Bush from gay men, and I've come across some incredibly ignorant arguments for Bush from gay men, and I've never understood how they could support someone who is blatantly for preventing social equity for the GLBT community.
I doubt that exit polls are overly accurate, but if this is true, I weep....

"Yeah, this guy wants to remove our specific minority's rights, and set back social progress for decades...but I'm voting for him!"
It's simply unbelievable. I've often heard people justify their bigotry because it doesn't hit home for them; they're happy to restrict the rights of others as long as their own are untouched. Obviously, it's immoral and blatantly unfair, but I can at least understand that as sort of a 'us vs. them' mentality. But when you're actively trying to make yourself a second-class citizen? It boggles the mind.

Well, I know that two of my gay friends down here in Mississippi voted for Kerry...
... but a lesbian friend of mine not only voted for Bush (no pun intended), but despite her having a live in partner she also voted for the ban on gay marriage as an amendment to the state constitution.
She said it 'wasn't right' that two people of the same sex should marry.
I promise on my eyes that this is 100% truth.

Probably just as well she's a lesbian. We wouldn't want her stupid genes going on any further.Flakin wrote:Well, I know that two of my gay friends down here in Mississippi voted for Kerry...

That would be the devoutly religious gay folks and gays who were Republicans from the beginning. I've met a few and despite what has been presented, they still would prefer the President's religious morality to Kerry's secularism. One gay man who I talked to said he would vote for the President and I asked him why. He responded by saying, "Because I am a devout Catholic." I ask him why he would still support the President because he had tried to make an attempt at putting a ban on gay marriage. He responded, "I personally think that marriage really is a thing just for heterosexuals. Besides, my partner and I already get benefits from our work." I asked him why would he still support the President on the gay ammendment ban, even if he already had benefits, that there would be so many more who would not. No response this time.
I guess religious "morality" over rides even basic principles, as the exit polls keep saying.

Maybe so. Or it's possible that they've got other priorities.Admiral Valdemar wrote:That may be so. I'll tell you what she wasn't voting with, and that particular organ resides in the skull.Stormbringer wrote: Or perhaps some people vote with more than their genitals?

That would have to be the case for someone to discredit their own lifestyle and social crowd with a vote directly opposing equality for gays and lesbians.Stormbringer wrote:

The thing is, I can't see a reason to vote for Bush even on those non-gender related grounds which has me just as perplexed. Again, I'm sure it was down to Bush having a solid goal and Kerry being a montage of greys rather than black or white.
You can understand I'm still trying to understand this election result and odd voters like this don't help.

I can't say as it makes much sense to me either with Bush pushing "moral values" as hard as he did. But I can understand how some one can be gay and vote Republican.Admiral Valdemar wrote:That would have to be the case for someone to discredit their own lifestyle and social crowd with a vote directly opposing equality for gays and lesbians.

Why is this a surprise to anyone? Many gays and lesbians are filled with self-loathing because of their religious indoctrination from childhood.

I've never met anyone with that sort of attitude, so I guess this is once again another Made In America™ problem that persists in the confines of the "Bible Belt"Darth Wong wrote:Why is this a surprise to anyone? You should look up the stories of the homosexuals who have claimed to be "cured" of their "sickness" by the love of Christ. Of course, the reversion rate is high, but hey, what's a little thing like the truth when compared to the power of the imaginary sky dude?Admiral Valdemar wrote:I've never met anyone with that sort of attitude, so I guess this is once again another Made In America™ problem that persists in the confines of the "Bible Belt"

I've had some of these fuckers tell me with a straight face that gays have demons inside of them that make them do these horrible acts. When I pressed them on it they really believe. now. in the 21st century. at the pinnacle of man's technological achievments. that DEMONS inhabit gay people and make them immoral and corrupt.Darth Wong wrote:You should look up the stories of the homosexuals who have claimed to be "cured" of their "sickness" by the love of Christ. I'm afraid not. The president of Kd youth in Sweden is gay and is opposed gay marriage.Admiral Valdemar wrote:I've never met anyone with that sort of attitude, so I guess this is once again another Made In America™ problem that persists in the confines of the "Bible Belt"Darth Wong wrote:Why is this a surprise to anyone? And hey, the gay teen suicide rate isn't entirely to blame for kids unable to cope with the world they find themselves in, pure self loathing plays a role in some of those.

This is interesting as I have five gay friends, and one out of the five voted for Bush (gay Jewish guy). So that percentage seems to be about right in my circle of friends.
