The explanation I heard from spoilers is that 'Palpatine' is merely a disguise of Darth Sidious. It's simply the appearance and identity he puts up, primarily through the Force.

That's pretty much the revealing 'secret' of his identity that's been talked about and debated. It's backwards from how most people assume Sidious is Palpatine's secret identity/pseudonym, like he's a superhero or something.
I kind of like this idea, personally. It's "Force Facelift." Palpy was always an ugly guy with weird red eyes, he just uses the Force to "assume a pleasing shape" (like the demon he is).

Is Anakin's "red eye" a symptom of being a Dark Side dude? Maul had 'em too...

Sort of reminds me of the weird blue eyes that the demonically possessed had in "The Exorcist" or the eyes of the zombies in the remake of Night of the Living Dead. In this case, now you see 'em, now you don't (as the mood takes you). Maybe the Dark Side is like Melange... you get enough of it in your system and your eyes change.

The eyes are the windows to the soul right? And your soul is all yellowed and fiery and twisted to show the evil inside. Anakin had nice eyes when Luke took his mask off...

We'll have to see if there is anything to this theory in the actual film, but it's certainly an intruiging possibility!

*Then again maybe Lucas is taking a hand from David Lynch and just forgetting to color in everyone's eye's in every scene. ; ) [/joke]

Or maybe Palpy just has a good makeup team, wears contacts and brushes his teeth a lot while in the public eye, then cuts loose when nobody is looking. Like a werewolf shaving all the time so nobody notices..!

Oh, the crazy speculation from so little footage!

If the Ep3 is as good as the teaser trailer I might forgive Lucas for the Ewoks and Gungans.

Is it against the rules to link to a mirror of the movie with a + in front?

My hopes for this movie are officially up. And if Lucas disappoints again...let's just say my reaction won't be pretty. This movie has so much potential, moreso than eps I and II, because this one has Vader.

I just hope Vader's done right. I don't care if they mess up his suit a little, and I can even stand them CGing him. But let's face it: it takes more than a helmet, heavy breathing, and James Earl Jones to do Vader right. He has to ooze evil and say a quote that will become famous every third line.
"I want to mow down a bunch of motherfuckers with absurdly large weapons and relative impunity - preferably in and around a skyscraper. Then I want to fight a grim battle against the unlikely duo of the Terminator and Robocop. The last level should involve (but not be limited to) multiple robo-Hitlers and a gorillasaurus rex."--Uraniun235 on his ideal FPS game

"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force."--Darth Vader

My theory on the whole Prequel Palpatine/Sidious vs. ROTJ Palpatine is that Palpatine is channeling huge ammounts of Force energy into preventing the Jedi from detecting him; this explains Mace's revelation in AOTC that the Jedi's ability to use the Force has diminished.

But it also means that, though he is a Sith Lord, it's wrecking tremednous damage on his body; the Palpatine of AOTC, even though it is ten years later, is more withered and ancient-looking than his TPM counterpart. Once the Jedi are eliminated, in theory, he can let go of it. But by holding onto all of this power for so long, it has become a narcotic to Palpatine/Sidious and he can't let go of it, thus causing the further decay of his body up until ESB/ROTJ.

Of course, it's also likely due to age; Palpatine is at least in his late 50's, early 60's as of TPM, with an additional 36 years until ROTJ. And as Yoda stated, "When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not!"

Stravo wrote:That's IT?! That's what the folks here have been creaming their pants over all day? Jesus, I was expecting to be blown away, I was expecting the second coming. Instead I get a trailer that's pretty good but does not show enough lightsaber dueling, gives us little to no insight into the story. Very little dialogue and a shitty CGI'd Vader suit with crappy manacles. That's the big reveal.

Cartman: "Fucking weak."

Let's hope the full blown trailer is a quantum leap above this one.

Wanna get excited about Ep. III? Watch the making of Ep. III featurette in the DVD's. It's FAR more exciting, gives us more story details and we get to see some extended scenes of the Obi Wan-Anakin duel.
You know, the Episode III feature on the DVD has the "crappy looking manacles" as well. I don't understand how manacles can be crap. They're just manacles. :)

And yes, that suit does look a bit pants. Expect it to be changed/improved come the release of the film- like most of the footage in the teaser trailer, if we're judging from AOTC.

But, overall, that's the best teaser trailer of the lot. The ones for TPM and AOTC pale in comparison. The best *trailer* of the prequels is still TPM however. I bet ROTS will knock it out of its place, though.

How about Sidious and Palpatine being 2 different people? Palpatine has no Sith powers, thus no one in the Council suspects or senses him.

They work together for their own purposes, and at some point, one takes out another.

1. Sidious takes out Palpatine some point after he becomes emperor, no one is aware of the situation because now 'Palpatine' wears a cloak.

2. Palpatine takes out Sidious (probably via Anakin), and somehow he absorbs Sidious' powers.

It doesn't look right. I grew up with Vader, and that is not Vader, that is a guy dressed as Vader, but they've not duplicated the suit accurately enough. Hopefully, as said before, it will be fixed in post-production, or the other scenes will show him in better lighting.

As for Vader, I personally want the quote, prefferably before the Jedi Temple battle; "Anakin Skywalker is dead. I destroyed him. I am Darth Vader. Dark Lord of the Sith. Now I shall destroy you...¹ It is your destiny. *lightsabre snap-hiss*"

Prefferably with a blend of James Earl Jones' voice and Hayden's if that's possible.

¹ Or : "Now you too shall fall before me."
