my god i hate depeche mode. especially that one goddamn video with that guy walking around carrying a chair and whining insipidly. it was godawful then and godawful now.

Hey! I added them because my bro mentioned them, not because I particularly like them. Duran Duran > *

And Jan Hammer and Jarre did a lot of synth music. I love synth. The '80s were full of it. Check out their versions of "Crockett's Theme" from Miami Vice.

I should note, the GTA: VC OST is a great source for all things '80s related. It was circa 1986.

ZZ-Top - they've been around a long time but they hit it big in the 80s with their videos.
Twisted Sister - early 80s "Heavy Metal" Were Not Gonna Take It, I Wanna Rock
Quiet Riot - Cum Feel the Noize, Slick Black Cadillac
Def Leppard - anything from 'High and Dry' or Pyromania is you want 80's or earlier.
Mötley Crüe - from "Girls, Girls, Girls" on back.
Europe -don't like them but they were definately 80s
Bon Jovi - "Slippery When Wet" was a huge album in 86/87
Van Halen - 1984 and 5150 are both big 80s albums. Diver Down was also out in the 80s but 1984 was the last album with DLR and it was huge. 5150 was the first with Sammy and it hit pretty well.
Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane was an early 80s hit.
The Cars -- another big 80's video band. Plus there's Moving In Stereo scene from 'Fast Time at Ridgemont High'
Living Colour -- Cult of Personality being their one hit. They've done a few decent covers for movie soundtracks but really they'v only go that one song.
John "Cougar" Mellencamp - Anything from his album "Uh Huh" or earlier is 80s or earlier. If it just says John Mellencamp on it that's 90's or later.

Older than the 80s

Black Sabbath
Dio (aka Ronnie Jame Dio) - the creater of the Rock-n-Roll devil horns. Actually had a lot of stuff of his own and with Black Sabbath in the 80s.
Nazareth -- almost a one hit wonder. Don't bother with a greatest hits album just get Hair of the Dog it has all of their really good songs on it anyway. {i]Hair of the Dog, Love Hurts[/i] being the two more well known ones.
Tedd Nugent -- Stranglehold, Great White Buffalo, Cat Scratch Fever
The Who
The Doors
Steve Miller Band
The Rolling Stones -- Just stick with their greatest hits from the 70's or earlier.
Deep Purple
Rainbow - I really only like "Main On the Silver Mountain" and that was with Dio as the lead singer.
Queen -- I don't really remember listening to anything they put out after the 80s so that pretty much means all of their Greatest Hits, plus "It's a Kind of Magic" (the soundtrack to Highlander) plus the soundtrack to "Flash Gordon" would all fit in there. Bohemian Rhapsody is technically 80s and earlier but most people associated it with "Wayne's World" which was in the 90s.
Blue Öyster Cult - mainly Don't Fear the Reaper but I like Godzilla too.

Guns-N-Roses -- if you stick with their really good stuff. Appetite for Destruction and Lies are both from the 80s and before Axel became drunk with power.

Iron Butterfly - In-a-Gadda-da-vida a very very long one hit wonder from late 60s early 70s. It may be too psychedlic in style if you are mostly shooting for an 80s vibe.

They pretty much ended 80's heavy rock and gave way to Grunge rock.
