my god i hate depeche mode. especially that one goddamn video with that guy walking around carrying a chair and whining insipidly. it was godawful then and godawful now.Admiral Valdemar wrote:How about Tangerine Dream, Depeche Mode and Jan Hammer along with Jean-Michelle Jarre and Duran Duran.

I'll add that to the list.Admiral Valdemar wrote:How about Tangerine Dream, Depeche Mode and Jan Hammer along with Jean-Michelle Jarre and Duran Duran.
EDIT: BTW, I do not recognize Jan Hammer and Jean-Michelle Jarre. What songs were they famous for?

Hey! I added them because my bro mentioned them, not because I particularly like them. Duran Duran > *Col. And Jan Hammer and Jarre did a lot of synth music. I love synth. The '80s were full of it. Check out their versions of "Crockett's Theme" from Miami Vice.
I should note, the GTA: VC OST is a great source for all things '80s related. It was circa 1986.
EDIT: Don't forget Vangelis!

Good bands, 80s and older:
Tears for Fears
Velvet Underground
The Stooges
Elton John
Cream
Earth, Wind, & Fire
The Commodores
Ray Charles
Talking Heads
Spinal Tap (both for comedic value, and their music is actually better than 90% of the 80's hair metal shite)
AC/DC (Dalton will be very displeased should he find their nonappearance on this list)
Michael Jackson - how could you forget him?
Novelty 80s bands that are worth listening to:
Flock of Seagulls (at least I Ran, anyway)
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Twisted Sister
Rick James (bitch!)
Crappy 80's shit that is comedy gold today:
Culture Club
Thompson Twins
Wham! (sorry Brits, it must be said)
The kitschy dance club music from Scarface
Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas' attempts at music
Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time
Bands that every time you listen to, 14 more people get infected with genital warts (it's true!):
Metallica
Tears for Fears
Velvet Underground
The Stooges
Elton John
Cream
Earth, Wind, & Fire
The Commodores

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Bwahaha! Especially when the bastard fans seem to think the opening instrumental piece to their older concerts was made by them and not Ennio Morricone (the piece was "Ecstasy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly).Joe wrote: Bands that every time you listen to, 14 more people get infected with genital warts (it's true!):

Oh yeah, Frank Zappa, too. If you ever want to be able to spout half-informed bullshit about rock you gotta know Zappa.

May the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce.
Dead or Alive --- You spin me right round baby, right round like a record or something like that. They are the bad for people who don't think Culture Club went far enough in whatever direction Boy George was taking his style at the time.
Thompson Twins
Pet Shop Boys
Duran Duran
ZZ-Top - they've been around a long time but they hit it big in the 80s with their videos.
Twisted Sister - early 80s "Heavy Metal" Were Not Gonna Take It, I Wanna Rock
Quiet Riot - Cum Feel the Noize, Slick Black Cadillac
Def Leppard - anything from 'High and Dry' or Pyromania is you want 80's or earlier.
Mötley Crüe - from "Girls, Girls, Girls" on back.
Europe -don't like them but they were definately 80s
Bon Jovi - "Slippery When Wet" was a huge album in 86/87
Van Halen - 1984 and 5150 are both big 80s albums. Diver Down was also out in the 80s but 1984 was the last album with DLR and it was huge. 5150 was the first with Sammy and it hit pretty well.
Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane was an early 80s hit.
The Cars -- another big 80's video band. Plus there's Moving In Stereo scene from 'Fast Time at Ridgemont High'
Living Colour -- Cult of Personality being their one hit. They've done a few decent covers for movie soundtracks but really they'v only go that one song.
John "Cougar" Mellencamp - Anything from his album "Uh Huh" or earlier is 80s or earlier. If it just says John Mellencamp on it that's 90's or later.
Older than the 80s
Black Sabbath
Dio (aka Ronnie Jame Dio) - the creater of the Rock-n-Roll devil horns. Actually had a lot of stuff of his own and with Black Sabbath in the 80s.
Nazareth -- almost a one hit wonder. Don't bother with a greatest hits album just get Hair of the Dog it has all of their really good songs on it anyway. {i]Hair of the Dog, Love Hurts[/i] being the two more well known ones.
Tedd Nugent -- Stranglehold, Great White Buffalo, Cat Scratch Fever
The Who
The Doors
Steve Miller Band
The Rolling Stones -- Just stick with their greatest hits from the 70's or earlier.
Deep Purple
Rainbow - I really only like "Main On the Silver Mountain" and that was with Dio as the lead singer.
Queen -- I don't really remember listening to anything they put out after the 80s so that pretty much means all of their Greatest Hits, plus "It's a Kind of Magic" (the soundtrack to Highlander) plus the soundtrack to "Flash Gordon" would all fit in there. Bohemian Rhapsody is technically 80s and earlier but most people associated it with "Wayne's World" which was in the 90s.
Blue Öyster Cult - mainly Don't Fear the Reaper but I like Godzilla too.
Guns-N-Roses -- if you stick with their really good stuff. Appetite for Destruction and Lies are both from the 80s and before Axel became drunk with power.
Iron Butterfly - In-a-Gadda-da-vida a very very long one hit wonder from late 60s early 70s. It may be too psychedlic in style if you are mostly shooting for an 80s vibe.
Thompson Twins
Pet Shop Boys
Duran Duran
ZZ-Top - they've been around a long time but they hit it big in the 80s with their videos.

List has been updated. Who did the song "Tarzan Boy" and the Ghostbusters song?
EDIT: I need to know who does the 80's version of "Summer Holiday"?

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red
