Man commits suicide at Ground Zero over Bush re-election

NEW YORK - A 25-year-old man from Georgia who was apparently distraught over President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election shot and killed himself at ground zero. Andrew Veal's body was found Saturday morning inside the off-limits site, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A shotgun was found nearby, but no suicide note was found, Coleman said.

Veal's mother said her son was upset about the result of the presidential election and had driven to New York, Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, told The New York Times in Sunday's editions.

Friends said Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry.

"I'm absolutely sure it's a protest," Mary Anne Mauney, Veal's supervisor at the lab, told The Daily News. "I don't know what made him commit suicide, but where he did it was symbolic."

Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority.

I'd understand if it was some social recluse who spent all his time on politics or on the computer, but if he was in a steady enough relationship that he was going to get married, he was an indescribably idiotic and selfish fuckwit who deserves no sympathy whatsoever. It takes a special kind of asshole to do something like this to one's loved ones for such a fucking trivial (all things considered) reason.

I don't think he was an idiot. I think he was a very troubled person who was going to kill himself anyway, and figured, since the election put him over the edge, he'd try and do something meaningful with his death.

I'm not saying I agree with him (because I don't), and I'm not saying it wasn't selfish (because it was), but I think it's more that he was severely depressed and didn't receive any help for his depression, not that he thought it'd be a good idea to protest Bush by blowing his brains out. I've known too many intelligent, suicidally depressed people to just label them idiots and move on without feeling at least a twinge of sympathy.

At least he didn't take anyone with him. Unlike the fucker this week who parked his car on a level crossing right before the Paddington to Plymouth express ploghed into it killing 6 and injuring a dozen more.

Maybe he was on the secret watch list, and knew that he was about to be disappeared, tortured, and killed by the evil guys in black cars with dark tinted windows. Of course if you believe that you should probably put up a few more sheets of lead on your walls to block the evil spy rays.
