Pwned.

Simple and plain.

Too bad Kerry couldn't do anything like that.

Let me spell it out.

The miltary will not take up a draft. The current training and control methods are not suitable to draftees. A draft would be a mess beyond anything the miltiary is willing to put up with.

Any party that allows a draft to pass will doom itself to a backlash of mythic size and anger.

There will be no draft.

Because a lot of people on the left; talk show hosts, pundits, unaffliatted campaigners, and such have all been trying to raise the spectre of the draft regardless of whether it's true or not.

its a common topic out here, anyway. hearing about a president who likes having wars, and a fully used military, kinda raises the question.

I assume he was talking about a draft, since it never really said. In which case:  The military does not have the infrastructure to handle a large influx of draftees and train them to front line combat standards before their two year enlistment runs out. Add onto this that draftees make poor soldiers and are not wanted anyway for that reason and you're looking at, to borrow from Lucas, a phantom menace. Only this phantom is just that; there's no Palpatine in the shadow behind.

It's not hard to destory Bush without resorting to a fake draft scare. The Left should have come up with better and won this election.

As HemlockGrey said, it's amazing how many people have totally missed the point of the thread, no offense. It's not about the draft, ok?

No it's about the Left's inability to actually attack the wide open Right.

It's about the lack of credibility of the Administration!

Of course, but the ironic (nay moronic) thing about this is that rather than rip into the Administration for any one of the very real lies, the left has instead focused on the draft. And never mind that the only bill for it is by own of their own.

Did you actually listen to the speech?

It's a fucking litany of the Administration's lies and misrepresentations, the point isn't about any draft, it's about the fact that people would rather believe unsupported internet sources than the US bloody govenrment.

The poeple don't know what to think, simply. They're being told by one side that their government is evil and will eat their babies if they had half the chance, from the other that the terrorists are evil and will eat their babies given half the chance if they don't listen to the government, and in between ebing shown images of a war raging halfway around the world. Add in the typical ignorance of an American citizen, and you have a climate in which they'll believe anything they read, assuming it vindicates their fears one way or the other.

No one would believe in the possibility of a draft if, sadly, there was not a very real and plausible possibility that:

A) Their Commander in Chief is insane
B) Their Commander in Chief is an idiot
C) Their Commander in Chief is a liar

C is already known to be true, so either A or B would be enough to raise the spectre in someone's mind, unaffected by whether a draft would be insane or stupid (hint: insane or stupid people can do insane or stupid things). I suppose one might argue that the Congress would stop him, but the Congress has shown itself to be capable of going along with deceptive, insane, or stupid ideas before. So showing that the draft is insane or stupid is, sadly, not enough evidence to convince a lot of people to totally rule it out.

Reiteration: No one started the idea that a draft raising. However, the entire ambiance currently surrounding the Administration was what created the idea that a potential draft might be raised. People are seeing that Iraq has not gone as the Administration has said, people are seeing that the military is overstreched, people are seeing that the United States must still play a role as the policemen of the world, and people are seeing that there are other potential enemy states that President Bush has clearly outlined. No Democrat brought this up and no Republican brought it up (directly). What DID bring it up was that young Americans are seeing the truth to the situation and realize that with the current plans this Administration is proposing, there's a sense that its not going to work and there is a growing distrust of this Administration among young Americans because they're the very first ones who will be affected in the event of another very major conflict, should that arise.

With the military so overstreched and the Administration not wanting to piss off everyone, they've now resorted to diplomacy. What they seem to have forgotten in the pre-Iraq invasion was that the use of military action is the last resort because of a failure in foreign policies and diplomacy. They never even gave a realistic chance for diplomacy to work out in Iraq; they had to learn it the hard way.
