The essential guide to weapons and technology states that they can only reach into low orbit. Is that due to atmospheric distortions? Or is there another reason?
1. As I understand it, SW jamming is virtually inpenetrable. Active sensors at "close ranges" is the only thing that can penetrate it right, even if an entire planet's worth of active sensors are trying really hard.
2. A way to get around this would be a large series of sensor/comm relays stretching from the target and the originator?
3. Is it possible to accurately fire planetary guns(as in v-150s and the like) at ships far far away(combat range wise), say 200k miles away, with no active sensors besides the stuff the guns have themselves.
4. whats the ROF on something like a v-150?

No idea, but I don't recall anything suggesting that was an upper limit in terms of range. The SW technical journal specifies that Ion cannons can reach 'high orbits' (reinforced by other secondary EU sources as well) and the ISB states that the ion cannon can hit "super-orbital" targets (the opposite of sub-orbital.. suggesting targets outside the orbit of the planet.)gamesguy wrote:The essential guide to weapons and technology states that they can only reach into low orbit. The New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology lists the KDY-150's range as being 180,000 km.
The principle is that its easier for active sensors to through active countermeasures (such as jamming) at closer range (aside from which, getting closer can allow one to eyeball the target.)1. They do exist (the Imperial Communications ship for example.) fire-control TIE fighters also serve that sort of purpose as well (providing additional targeting telemetry for capital ships)2. Depends on the target as with most things. It *should* be possible, although the chances of such occuring I have no idea (I'd guess they're not good though.)3. One volley per six seconds according to EU sources. No idea on how many shots are in a "volley", but if we go by TESB, it has to be at least 2-4 shots, given how many the Ion cannon fired at the Star Destroyer.)4. whats the ROF on something like a v-150?
