I know you're Christian, Magi. Read those gospels again! You'll find a lot of text that has to deal with "don't flaunt religion, just have faith." You never see those sermons in church though. There are certain verses of the Bible that are well-known all over. This is not because they are particularly well-written or insightful versees, but because they serve the agenda and the image that the church is trying to create for itself. I know there's a verse around Matthew 20some (I think) that says whoever goes around bragging about their Christianity is not worthy of heaven. Go look, its in there. But you never hear about it. It would hurt the Cause.

Oops, not around 20. Matthew 6.
Jesus wrote:1 "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Right out of the sermon on the mount. But its in the middle, between the "blessed are the"s and the Lord's Prayer. So no one cares.

I think you're thinking of Matthew 23, the denouncing of the scribes and Pharisees. Could also be Matt 25:31-46, the judgment of nations. 27 on is the passion narrative, so it wouldn't be after that.

The one I qouted came from Jesus' confrontation with Satan in the wilderness. Satan urged him to take a leap of faith from a high point has surreeeyyyy God would save him.

Jesus reply has I stated. It's a standard caution from doing something stupid, has we can see case in point.

I know. My point is that scripture is good when it serves your purposes. But if something in scripture directly conflicts with something you want to do.... well, that verse probably isn't all that important anyway.

Besides, the Bible contradicts itself so often you can find a justification for about anything. Even infanticide! Go into the epistles if you want a point-counterpoint against most of the "love and humbleness" that Jesus spouts in the Gospels.

Thing is, I always thought that the direct world of Jesus trumped everything. I guess not since when I used his qoutes to defend my postion, but was shouted down with OT qoutes and Paul.

I've long since stopped trying to debate the Bible. The usual response to my carefully constructed, well-thought out, and factually supported (both with scientific evidence AND passages from scripture!) argument is "You're going to hell, you poor, poor atheist. But you deserve it."

Fuck em.

To get back on topic: Look at the silly picture of the guy and the lions! Isn't he so cute and dumb?

The letters of Paul are older than the gospels; we don't have the direct words of Jesus at any point, but stories told about him that were passed down a generation and appear to have been written as the last of the original followers were dying off, circa 70-100. Paul's letters were written between 40-60. That said, there's no real definite hierarchy of scripture. It's generally accepted that NT is over OT when they're in direct contradiction, but not everyone agrees.

Nonsense, the man is clearly a prophet. You're just showing your a priori antisupernatural bias. Shame on you.

Gosh, I tell you, they seem to get dumber by the minute.

Great picture, though.
