I wouldn't stroll around downtown LA in anything less than a tank.
I guess we're lucky that they didn't get carjacked.
lol
yeah, I could just picture bush's briefing on that one. erm it appears that the south side crips have captured several strykers. we're blaming the release of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas .

I wish they would. My union could use a few hundred dead members. The fuckers blacklisted me because I refused to go picket.

Can't see the video, but the whole "Stryker" thing was confusing. To my knowledge, no LE agencies have any Stryker variants. Strykers can be found only in SBCTs and units transforming into Stryker units (3d BDE, 2d ID, 1st BDE, 25th ID, etc.). All active SBCT units are currently in Iraq.

They're LAV's with 25mm autocannons. No police agency in the US has that. Even LA.

Again, I think the protestors are taking a coincidence and having dellusions of grandure.
Well, downloaded the Free Apple movie program so I could see the footage. From what I could tell, some Marines were trying to get their LAVs from one point to another. Protesters went nuts trying to "block the tanks," cops showed up on bicycles to push back the protesters, and the LAVs continued on their way.
By the way, does anyone really think those protesters are helping some sort of cause?

They sure do. In the bay area they procreate in public.

The funny thing is, during the LA riots in the early 1990's they actually considered sending National Guard M1 tanks and M2 Bradleys (disarmed) to provide a show of force. The idea was vetoed in part over a fear one of them might be stolen.

You know it's a pretty sad protest when the biggest response you get to doing something disruptive is some cops on bikes.

I can't imagine that an M1 is that easy to... umm... tankjack? I suppose that's right. I mean, if you really think someone's going to pull you out, close the driver's hatch and you're set.

Cops did it in San Diego. Granted, they had to wait until the tank got stuck on the center divider and its tread broke, but they just shot, repeatedly, into the cabin killing the dude.

Tank hatches don't lock from the outside, and US Army vehicles don't have keys, so it would be very easy to steal one if it wasn't manned, and the crew wouldn't be in them 24/7, espically since they would have mainly only been used for making demonstrations with all weapons disarmed.

Looks like a Piranha to me . (I know, the LAV-III is based off the MOWAG Piranha, so shoot me).
BTW, is that some sort of writing on the back of the second LAV (at around 3:25 into the film)? It kinda looks like "AV4", but it could just be a symbol I don't know.

They deployed two fucking TANKS to counter an anti-war protest in LA
by John in DC - 11/10/2004 10:49:42 PM
FURTHER UPDATE: This is for real. I just called the protesters out in LA and confirmed it by phone. And I also just read a NEW excuse the military is now offering. The tanks "got stuck at a traffic light," and that's why they just happened to stop in front of an anti-war protest in the middle of a major US city. Uh huh.
UPDATE: I've just read in the comments to the IndyMedia site that someone spoke to some military folks who claim the tanks were "lost" and simply stopping in front of the anti-war protesters to "ask directions." Yeah, right. They were intentionally using deadly force to intimidate peaceful protesters in violation of their First Amendment rights. This is a big story.
Thanks to MyDD for finding this. This is beyond outrageous. A fucking tank (two in fact). Sent to disrupt an anti-war protests in LA, that by all accounts were acting quite peaceably. You can watch the video, a handful of people chanting, big deal. But then what happens next? Two big fat tank - TANKS people - confront the protesters. They're sending God damn tanks into the streets of Los Angeles. Anyone has a problem with that? What is this, fucking Tiananmen Square?
I am absolutely speechless. We look like China. We look like the Soviet Union. They just sent two tanks to counter a peaceful protest in the second largest city of America. Good God. And where is the media coverage? They just sent TANKS to counter peaceful protesters. That kind of an outrageous challenge to the protesters could have easily sparked violence.
People, please, contact your local media, call any reporters you know, tell them about this. This is a huge story. This is absolutely scary shit. Sending tanks to confront peaceful protesters in an American city in 2004. Who the fuck are we anymore?

Whoever wrote this part is a fucking idiot. Deadly force? Yeah they were acting very aggressive towards those protesters. And then he compares it to China? Right.....this guy has blown this way out of proportion.

The more I hear about these morons, the more I wished that they did turn that Bushmaster on em and used deadly force.

Yeah, that's why I say deadly force my ass. If it was a deadly force situation they wouldn't have been standing their shouting their stupid slogans they'd be running for their lives.
Also, I'm not familar with procedure for those but would they actually be carrying live ammo? I suppose it would depend on what they are doing but if not then this "deadly force" situation is ironic because those in the vehicle were probably in more danger from the crowd. LOL
