Z-95 engine configuration

Post by Rogue 9 »

Quick question. Does the Z-95 have two engines, or four? For some reason, I remember the fighter having two in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and XWA, but the XWA Upgrade people are putting on four, and I've run into several depictions of four-engined -95s, the most clear one being this:

So, which is it? Am I just going crazy remembering only two engines, or are there conflicting accounts?

Two engines, though in fairness it's possible that some have been modified to sport additional ones since the thing's been on the market for so long and customized so often.

Everything I've seen points to 4 engines. Do you have any in game photos?

I allways thought it was a 4 engine 2 wing configuration, compared to X-Wing's 4 engine 4 wing configuration.

Not at the moment, but a minute and Google image search should change that.

Too big to inline

Well, now I see where my confusion came from. Looks like two intakes and four exhaust nozzles. :?

Edit: Clicky clicky This one has four intakes. I'm thoroughly confused now.

Will we see Z-95's in ROTS? If not can it still be described as the premier starfighter of the clone war era?

Supposedly no, to my great sorrow. Then again, we pretty clearly saw some VSDs in the background of the Grievous screenshot in the Databank, and that wasn't supposed to make an appearance either. Hopefully the guys at ILM will work in some in the background, as easter eggs if nothing else.

well it's pre-TPM desing that survives to post-ROTJ. After all the fact that the GAR doesn't use doesn't mean it was not used during the clone wars (sectorail militias..

That's the first time I've seen a pic like that. It' looks like they screwed up.

starwars.com has all 4 engine pics

I'd wager in-uni the 4 engine variant is more prevalent; out-uni the x-wing games screwed up.

Wouldn't be the first thing they screwed up. Here's to the X-Wing: Alliance Upgrade Project, for fixing the errors (including making a 17 km SSD model!).

I've never seen a two engine Headhunter. Always the four engine one. Thats in Xwing/ Allaince, Jedi Knight II, and anything else I've ever seen on the Headhunter.

Even SW.com has the four engines.

Though reading the blurb, it does imply there were two engine varients.

The original Z-95 had a single primary engine.

I'd say similar to an F-16's configuration, spinal with an underslung intake.

Yeah, but there are several problems with that.

1.) Space. No atmosphere to redirect for maneuvering. Multiple engines improve maneuverability drastically, though yes, I do realize Z-95s were originally atmospheric fighters.

2.) It would require such a rebuild of the basic frame that you could barely call it the same class of fighter.

Thrust vectoring through vanes and/or gimbal-mounted nozzle? I would think that would allow for maneuverability, although not as good as multiple engines

True.

I believe I read somewhere that the Mark 1 Headhunter had two engines, while the Mark 2 and later had four engines. It might have been back at the beginning of the Jedi Academy series, because I'm thinking it was mentioned when Mara's Headhunter got stolen.

In that case, it's more likely to be I, Jedi, simply because Stackpole tends to pay more attention to the fighters than Anderson. You could be right, though.

No, I'm fairly certain it was Kyp Durron stealing it to get to the Sun Crusher, though my memory may be off. I just remember it was in the only one of the trilogy I owned (the first book). Was Mara in I, Jedi? I only read that one once, and didn't particularly like it, so I don't remember much about it.

She was, and her fighter was in it more; Kyp returned it to Yavin after stealing the Sun Crusher, but Mara had already left. Corran Horn used it on the occasion of the attack on Luke's comatose body by those gigantic flying Sith bat things; he shot down four outside the temple.

I, Jedi takes place during the Jedi Academy Trilogy, and includes more description of the flight of Kyp.

And I've always imagined 2 engines (to go with the 2 wings), although that's probably just me.

Bah. Humbug. :?

ROTJ had TIE fighters and X-wings and Y-wings, yet it also introduced A-wings, B-wings (briefly), and the TIE interceptor. Why can't they throw in the Z-95 just as briefly as the B-wings? It hurts nothing and no-one, and it throws the fans a bone.

If ask me, I would say that in dogfight the Z-95 would win, but the ARC-170 is better at finishing capships (more gun and probaly bigger torp load.)
