*sigh* Its not arrogance, rather than expidiency. Anymore than a marble statue would make great cover in the thick of shit, when any other time it is a cultural icon. Or the Presidential Bedroom is just a good place to rack out half a platoon, when before it was an executive privilage.

If it were an operational mosque and the troops barged in there and did a line dance on the rug, you'd have a point. When the troops have fought to take it against the enemy who used it as a stronghold, then collapse on a covienient soft and semi comfortable rug, then it hardly make them arrogant, just tired.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

The whole OP is a perfect example of whiny, disconnected liberal fucks. Not to say that all liberal fucks are whiny and disconnected, no... it's a subset that will find not only ANY reason to criticize the conservatives, but they'll find the DUMBEST reasons.

"America is disrespectful for using practical and efficient behaviors in a crisis." Oh yeah. This REALLY makes me regret not voting for John Kerry. "Sensitive war", indeed.

How like conservative dumb-shits to equate the word "sensitive" to "feminine, gentle and pussified." I swear, you people seize on talking points like they were human blood for Dick Cheney's feeding time.

You clearly missed the important part, "taking pictures"...if you're in a situation where you can have a sit down and get out the kodak, give a fucking thought to what you're doing with it.

You have to be kidding. These guys had probably been fighting pretty much all day, and then they get a brief rest and someone (we have no idea who) decides to take pictures and this obligates them to take their shoes off in the middle of a room filled with potentially dangerous debris in an area that still houses insurgents how?

Doesn't look very "secured" to me there. Once
again, Keevan proves his stupidity.

Did I say they should take thier shoes off?
No, I said they shouldnt be lounging about taking fucking pictures disrespecting a holy place if they dont want to keep fucking the locals off...

Heaven forbid someone might connect the dots and think of the whole thing in one go.

As for who took the picture, as they are apparently out hunting insurgents and the camera is in the room it's either one of the soldiers or someone with the soldiers taking it. Either way, not a good reflection on them.

And what would you have them do instead, Keevan? Hunt around for another, non-holy building to take a breather in and then secure it? You're being ridiculous. What if they all took their boots off to show respect and then insurgents attacked? Whoops! Time to spend a minute or two putting your shoes back on. (But not before having everyone walk to the lobby of the mosque and off of the prayer rug to do so, of course.)

I'm trying to fathom why it may possibly be okay to take a rest inside a damaged mosque, but if someone dares to snap a picture then the entire situation becomes irredeemably offensive.

With all due respect, you dont know the situation they were in nor do you have an accurate context to base an opinion. The photo should probably not have become public, but never the less, there is a saying that you tell a person what to do, not how they should do it.

No, the problem start only if such a picture is made public. An excelent PR image to fire up the ignorant.

Or confiscate it. HMG does have some rather interesting ideas on public copyright.

Perhaps they shouldnt be taking pictures then ?

A set of rules of what pictures can be taken by GIs and more importantly be disseminated on the internet might be a good idea.
GIs arent journalists, they are there to fight.
A picture like this can be used in the media-war which is just as important as the real war if we want a favorable outcome of this whole mess.

If someone caught a picture of insurgents wearing shoes in the same mosque I'm sure nobody would care.

Just to clarify, the way this is quoted makes it appear as though the LA Times is talking about World War III. They're not, it's the blogger.
