Um, no. They are motivated chiefly by a desire for non-smokers to be able to go to bars without being exposed to hazardous and noxious chemicals. Smokers can still smoke when they go out; they just have to go outside when they do it. A non-smoker in a smoking bar has no option to escape the smoke if he wants to ever go inside.
In Ashes to Ashes, Richard Kluger quotes several antitobacco activists as stating one of the main reasons behind pushing such bans is to stigmatize the activity to a point that smokers would seriously consider quitting.
I'm sure that's what he thinks, and it may even be what many activists think. But on local talk radio during the debates revolving around this ban, the ability of non-smokers to finally go to bars seemed to be front and center. Admittedly this is not a scientific survey, but I doubt one has been done. The point is that the activist is not really representative of Joe Blow Voter.
I really recommend reading the book. It's an eyeopener on the history of tobacco and the controversy surrounding it. If nothing else, it makes me regret that my parents didn't invest $1000 in Philip Morris stock back in 1961.
Tobacco companies are geniuses at maximizing the profits at the expense of public health, no doubt about that. Although the same could be said of junk food companies. At least there's no such thing as second-hand eating.

Hmm different systems. Here you cannot refuse to hire a smoker, one reason is that habit is legal.
It doesn't fall under what's known as a 'protected category' under US Federal laws.
Not sure I catch your meaning there with this context, 'protected category' ?
However, I do believe there are a few states that have made discrimination against smokers illegal.
Good for them, Imo, I do dislike discrimnation, even over a noxious habit like smoking.

It's a term I learned as a union steward. It means that particular groups of persons have protection from discrimination under the federal civil rights laws.
Gender, race, religious belief (or lack thereof), and national origin are examples of 'protected categories' under federal statutes.
Sexual orientation and smoking status (smoker or nonsmoker) are two groups that have no protections under the federal laws, though both gays and smokers have protections under the laws of some of the states.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Ahh, gotcha. Here discrimination on the basis of sexual oreintation, or if you smoke, is very much a legal no no.

Except in certain japanese porn movies.
Don't ask... I'm still shellshocked.
Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who did not.
I smoke maybe two packs a week. I take fewer breaks at work than I'm technically entitled to, since we're busy, so none of that "extra breaks to smoke" business for me. I don't mind smoking outside. If some non-smoker thinks it's funny that I'm out there, hey, it's just a little bit of winter. Not everyone is a pussy about it.
But really, can we create some special "smoking bars" where everyone has to sign a waiver to get in? Beer and smokes just go well together. And anyway, who needs some guy with an alcohol-poisoned liver and an STD courtesy of the local sluts lecturing on about how unhealthy smoking is?

Where did this come from?

I think it's me regurgitating a Dennis Leary line with some different words.
