What I mean is that she showed up, refused offers to stay, went off, fucked around with Lando and co. for a few years, then turns around and says "Y'know, you did that all wrong."

lol i know what you meant. I just was getting to the point that some people who knew some Jedi Masters through personal memories or from histories know that what Luke did declaring himself a Master was done wrong

This is Zahn you know. His characters are not complete unless they're being better than the canon characters. Thrawn Who Conquers All, Karrde The One Who Han Solo Who Could Have Been, and Mara I'm A Better Jedi Than You. Ironically, I say this as a fan of Zahn's SW books. (well, the trilogy) :)

To be fair, they weren't that über in the trilogy; They got brainbugged out of all proportions somewhere inbetween the 2 series.

The Dark wrote:Actually, Luke's lightsaber fighting style makes sense. It's almost perfect longsword style, with very good stance (although the necessary theatrical pauses and long clinches to build suspense). By contrast, the prequel style is the sort of sword-fighting that would get a medieval or renaissance swordsman dead in about three seconds. Too showy, too flashy, and too damn impractical.
This original trilogy lightsaber duel discussion reminds me a bit of accounts of Miyamoto Musashi's technique. (If you don't know who he is...) Basically he's described in most accounts as having below average technique, but he absolutely massacres people with flashier and prettier styles. Function over form.

That wasn't what Mara said to Luke. That's what Zahn said to all the other EU authors. It was about time someone told off the other EU authors for screwing with the characters and not being able to keep Luke's abilities consistent. Besides, in-universe Mara was the only character that could have corrected Luke’s perceptions of the force. No living direct canon character had any force training pre-trilogy (Leia was out, as were the EU jedi-how did Kyle learn how to use the force anyway?). Mara’s force training came from the old days like Luke’s, but unlike Luke, Mara had the luxury of time to be properly trained. Mara’s criticalness of Luke is much like what a close friend or lover might say in order to help him lead a happier, more productive life.

Also, it's not fair to compare Luke's mastery of the force to Yoda's. Yoda had a 900 year head start. Remember that Bantam's EU was published before EP1 so there was no other canon character to define what a Jedi master was. (Note: Obi was not considered a master by me or Lucas marketing before the prequels: Exhibit A ). Yoda was the only example of a Jedi Master, and the only thing we saw was a wise old teacher that could predict the future (more or less) and lift an x-wing. By Zahn’s last book “Survivor’s Quest”, Luke has shown force ability, control, and wisdom. I’d consider him a master by this point.

Kyle was taught to be a Jedi by the Rhan(sp) the Jedi who is murdered at the start of Dark Forces 2 Jedi Knight.

Personally i'd always questioned the idea of Kartan being an official character, but he gets a mention in the last few NJO books so he's offocial wheather i like it or not.

He also has an incredibly brief comic-wank in the latest SW Tales.

Katarn would be official anyway, even without his appearences/mentions in the comics and novels.
