FUCKING ARACHNID MOTHERFUCKERS!
About an hour and a half ago I say a red-back spider come through my window...
Immediately setting out after it with my "wadded paper of hand protection and squashiness (+3)" I winged the bastard and he's gone to ground.
Intensive searching and deployment of high levels of chemical weapons have had no results. I'm just paranoid because the fucker was last sighted right next to my bed.
So...
1) Nothing will happen
2) I'll see him first and it will be Spider no more.
3) He'll spot me and I'll be in hospital for the next few days.
Just in case I do drop offline for a few days, you guys knew first...

Ouch. I can't remember how many black widows I've smashed. They're all over the place here in California.weemadando wrote:About an hour and a half ago I say a red-back spider come through my window...

And the worst part of it is, Southern California has the most venomous kind in the entire United States.
Anyway, it's not really the adults that you should worry about, it's the juvenile spiders. When an adult bites, it only gives you a percentage of its poison. When a juvenile bites, it gives you everything it has.

FYI for the "ignorant" yanks on this board (includes me) a Red Back spider is the same thing as the Black Widow spider here in America. Its a nasty bugger, but its not THAT deadly. At least weemadando doesn't have a Sydney Funnelweb crawling about. That thing is one of the most agressive spiders in the world, is the most venemos spider in the world, and its fangs can puncture through a quarter inch of leather.

I always thought the one to watch out for in the US was the Brown Recluse.
Thankfully, where I live there are none of either sort.
BTW Crazy, I've been meaning to ask: Why do you abbreviate Hitchhiker's Guide as HHTTG and not HGTTG?

Being an arachnophobe, my heart goes out to you. I have no desire to go to Australia because of your horrid horrid spiders. I live in Arizona, here we have Black Widows, harmless yet hideous Tarantulas, and , while not a true spider, the mind numbingly frightening solifuge or sun spider. However, none compare with the Sydney Funnel Web. They make tarantulas look cute. Black widow venom is good for you in comparison. When pissed, they`ll CHASE you. They can bite through a toenail. And I know that some time in my life, some dipshit will carelessly introduce them to the U.S.

I think you're right about the Brown Recluse being the worst in the US. Where I am, we have BRs, Widows, and scorpions, plus the state bird, the mosquito. If it's not poisonous or venomous, it sucks blood. At least it's getting cooler where I am, the bugs are slowing down.Phil Skayhan wrote:Sweet dreams AndoCrayz9000 wrote:And the worst part of it is, Southern California has the most venomous kind in the entire United States.weemadando wrote:About an hour and a half ago I say a red-back spider come through my window...

Me, I'm not afraid of spiders in the slightest. I see them, I tend to leave them alone. Of course that's because I live in a rural area, in an older house, so insects try to invade the house every spring, summer, fall, and winter. And the spiders eat the insects, so I leave them alone. Unfortunately it tends to mean lots of cobweb removal, but, ehhhhh.Frank Hipper wrote:Being an arachnophobe, my heart goes out to you. Sadly yes. The Sydney Funnel Web is the most dangerous spider in the world. The fucker is fast, has incredibly deadly venom, is extreme agressive, and can pierce almost anything you wear. The only real saftey is extremely bulky AND baggy clothing while wearing steele reinforced boots.IG-88E wrote:A quarter inch?!Alyeska wrote:FYI for the "ignorant" yanks on this board (includes me) a Red Back spider is the same thing as the Black Widow spider here in America. One scientist was researching this little bastard when one day out in the field a Funnel Web leaped out of its nest and nabbed him. He was scared and thought he was going to die. To his pleasent surprise he found that he wasn't poisoned. The bad thing though is that any type of Funnel web has a VERY painful bite because of the freaking size of their fangs.
I visited Australlia, and frankly I enjoyed being INSIDE the city area of Sydney more then touring the country side. Not many Funnel Webs are inside the 10th story of a hotel.

Big furry hunting spiders freak me out much more than a web dwelling type. The giant orb weavers we used to get in Ohio are a different story, though. Many things to drive an arachnophobe batty live in Ohio. I remember when I was six or so, and the local Wolf Spider population decided to congregate on the hill where I was riding my bike. I know that Tarantulas here in Arizona are found on the roads during breeding season, I think something similar was going on there. Australia has had a poor run of luck with wild life. Worst spider, plagues of rats and Rabbits, Kangaroos which seem to multiply faster then deer in suburban America, and the whole wild cats and wild dogs thing.

spiders... *blech*
i've been bitten by a few, luckly they were just those damned california jumping spiders...and one black widow (it either had just bitten something or didn't have a chance to inject the poison as i didn't have any ill effect, which is good seeing as my mom didn't beleive me when i said a big fat black spider bit me.)
personally i rather hate spiders...fascinating creatures but they freak the hell out of me.
