My roommate was in this humvee yesterday when it hit a land mine in central Iraq. He received minor injuries to his head and leg. The gunner was blown completely out of the turret and the passenger in the front seat lost one leg and may loose the other. The dash board is completely destroyed along with half the engine block.

Sounds very similar to what happened to the guys in Greg's unit this summer. I hope everything turns out alright for your roommate and the other guys with him.

A friend of mine in the 82 Airborne spent a tour in Iraq.
He was a SAW gunner. He had time two times where he was riding in a hummve where they had close misses. The first time, an RPG flew about two inches from the top of their vehicle. Another, a person tossed in a grenade. It landed right next to him. He grabbed it and tossed it out before it could explode. Luckly he made it out of Iraq unscathed.

Well you don't need to harden the new up-armored humvees. As they already have armor on them.
Armor is good, more armor is better. For one thing, a sandbag layer is going to seriously impede shrapnel from the armor layer being breached, and I am very protective of my testicles.

The armor actually did an incredibly good job protecting the crew, it seems. From the damage to the engine and dash, it's amazing that anyone survived at all.

It would also probably burn out the transmission, and destroy everything else in the drive train very quickly. The hummve is already basically at its weight limit with the standard up armoring.

It's always unfortunate that, through bureaucratic inertia, armies have to relearn lessons they've already painfully taken in again and again as time recurs. The slipshod gun-shields slapped onto most HMMWVs after the fact is an example of this, as is the lack of armor.

Hey, I'll lose fifty pounds to have a sandbag protecting my goodies. The fact that I can afford to do this, and the military is encouraging me to do so may have something to do with this stance though.

Well just one to protect a couple high value targets should be okay. Completely covering the floor though, the vehicle will not like you for that. Though ideally you'd want to just find a nice Vietnam surplus LVTP5 and build a complete second story fortress onto the roof. Just never ride inside under any circumstances since it's a gas-powered vehicle and the fuel tanks are in the floor..
