Canada - stomping on Bush doll finally did it.

Martin dismisses Parrish from caucus
Last Updated Thu, 18 Nov 2004 14:29:23 EST

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin expelled renegade Liberal MP Carolyn Parrish from the party's caucus on Thursday, citing her "unacceptable" behaviour.

Martin told reporters that while he has defended the controversial MP's right to speak in the past, he "cannot, as leader of our party and the government caucus, tolerate behaviour that demeans and disrespects others."

Carolyn Parrish (CP file photo)

Parrish, who represents the constituency of Mississauga-Erindale, is known for her outspoken remarks about Americans and U.S. President George W. Bush.

Her ouster from caucus follows the release this week of footage from CBC-TV's This Hour Has 22 Minutes, in which she is shown stomping on a Bush action figure.

The skit was filmed as Bush's office announced he would make a state visit to Ottawa later this month.

Parrish followed that stunt with an interview with the Canadian Press Wednesday, in which the former school teacher said she had no regrets over her behaviour and wouldn't be silenced by Martin.

"Every time he gets up and reprimands me, be it ever so gentle, it just feeds it and he looks like he can't control me, which he can't," she said.

Parrish said she had "absolutely no loyalty to this team. None."

She added of Martin: "If he loses the next election and he has to resign, I wouldn't shed a tear over it."

In the past, Parrish has called Americans "bastards" and mocked the U.S. plans for a missile defence shield by calling countries that sign on to the plan a "coalition of idiots."

Parrish's ouster could cause problems for the Liberals, who hold a slim minority in the House of Commons where every vote counts.

Unless she chooses to cross the floor to join another federal party, she will sit as an Independent in Parliament, joining Independent British Columbia MP Chuck Strahl.
About freaking time. Bold is mine. Having opinions about Bush is one thing. Having no party loyalty is another. Her constituitents voted her in as a Liberal. She should resign and have a by-election.

You say attention whore like its a bad thing.

But seriously...
Yes, she is entitled to her opinion, but she needs to understand that as an elected official she has to act professionally, regardless of how upset she may be. So I can't really blame them for removing her from the caucus.

But now Martin has just lost 1 vote - in an evenly split Parliament, so being booted from caucus wasn't as easy as it would be if Martin had a solid majority. Although Parrish would most likely go with the Dippers, so not much has changed.

For any pro-American legislation, the Conservatives would likely vote with the Libs, nullifying any Dipper "nos".

Yes, it's the same person. She obviously felt that she could get away with doing anything she wanted because of Martin's tenuous grip on power and his need to keep every Liberal MP on his side. She calculated wrong, but now Martin has taken a big risk. His seats plus the NDP's seats now add up to less than the Alliance+BQ.

The (Bush Wannabe) Alliance and the Bloc Quebecois? They get along?

Strangely enough, they do. It shouldn't come as a surprise; both of them want to weaken the federal government and ignore human rights. During the federal election campaign, Stephen Harper accused the Liberal PM of "hiding behind the Charter of Rights". Yes, that's right; this ass-clown thinks it's wrong to use the Charter of Rights as a guideline for law. And the Bloc Quebecois (naturally) agrees with him.

The two are not the same, but they understand each other. it's sort of like the way white supremacists have a certain respect for the black separatist Malcolm X, because they understand him. They do not understand Martin Luther King.

My respect for Martin has gone up a notch because of this. Obviously you can't tolerate this kind of dissent in your party. Freedom of speech is one thing, but saying that "you don't care if your party loses" the next election is another. Gutsy move by Martin.

Hmm... got a source? I can't find a record of Harper saying that. In fact, the first link in the above search indicates that it was the NDP who made that claim:
CTV wrote:Martin was also accused of hiding behind the Charter of Rights and Freedoms with regard to same-sex marriage. Duceppe and Layton said the Liberal strategy was to send questions regarding same-sex marriage to the Supreme Court rather than have a vote in the House.

"Why won't you allow this to be voted on in Parliament?" Layton fired at Martin. "What are you afraid of?"

My source is my ears. He said it during one of the televised debates leading up to the election. Find a full transcript of the debates and you'll find it. So stop bullshitting. And yes, Layton and Duceppe are nuts too. So what? Neither of them have a hope in hell of winning election, and that's why they're both free to spout off stupidities as much as they like. Harper was supposedly running a serious contender for the federal election.

Don't play dumb. You know the old Alliance Party basically took over the PC party and removed the word "progressive" from its name.

I believe she was reprimanded every time she bashed the Yanks on the air. The defference between Martin and Cretin is that Cretin actually agreed with her comments, Martin doesn't. This was just the straw that broke the camals back. Martin said so himself, it's possible that another Yank comment would have prompted her removal.

While she is certainly free to hate Americans all she wants and say whatever she likes, she still went over the line.

Has an elected offical and sitting member of a sovergn government, you have fewer rights than the average citizens. Applys to solders, police and other cival servents, you are a representive of the society and government at large. You do not get to vent in public, deal with it.
