Even More Puritanical Idiocy

Addiction to porn destroying lives, Senate told

Comparing pornography to heroin, researchers on Thursday called on Congress to finance studies on "porn addiction" and launch a public health campaign about the dangers.

"We're so afraid to talk about sex in our society that we really give carte blanche to the people who are producing this kind of material," said James B. Weaver, a Virginia Tech professor who studies the impact of pornography.

Internet pornography is corrupting children and hooking adults into an addiction that threatens their jobs and families, a panel of anti-porn advocates told the hearing organized by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., chairman of the Commerce subcommittee on science.

Brownback, a father of five, said when he was a boy, the typical kid's exposure was limited to occasional peeks at dirty magazines illicitly obtained by a buddy.

Now, he said, pornography seems pervasive. Children run across it while researching homework on the Internet. Vulgar ads arrive unexpectedly by e-mail. Some of his middle-age male friends limit their time alone in hotel rooms to avoid the temptation of graphic pay-per-view movies, Brownback said.

Mary Anne Layden, co-director of a sexual trauma program at the University of Pennsylvania, said pornography's effect on the brain mirrors addiction to heroin or crack cocaine. She told of one patient, a business executive, who arrived at his office at 9 a.m. each day, logged onto Internet porn sites, and didn't log off until 5 p.m.

Layden called for billboards and bus ads warning people to avoid pornography, strip clubs and prostitutes.

The panel discussion ranged from hardcore, violent pornography to audience complaints about a sexually suggestive promo that aired prior to this week's "Monday Night Football" game.

Brownback, an outspoken Christian conservative who has championed efforts to curb indecency on television and the Internet, said the public is beginning to realize "they don't just have to take it."

But he acknowledged the First Amendment right to free speech has limited congressional efforts.

In June, the Supreme Court blocked a law designed to shield Web-surfing children from pornography, ruling that requiring adults to register or use access codes before viewing objectionable material would infringe on their rights.

Brownback said scientific data is needed to help his cause.

Weaver acknowledged that research "directly assessing the impact of pornography addiction on families and communities is rather limited."

But he pointed to studies that show prolonged use of pornography leads to "sexual callousness, the erosion of family values and diminished sexual satisfaction."

Judith Reisman, a vocal critic of the Kinsey Institute and the field of sexology, suggested Congress require police officers to gather evidence of pornography at crime scenes to further research.

But this must bear in mind the prime rule of advertising, i.e., sex sells. So these ads must have scantily clad models in order to catch the eye.

I'll get to work designing the ad campaign for them. :P

Reminds me of this double-whammy I saw in Alabama once... big billboard ad for a strip club, but it was all text and you might not notice it but for the rather graphical billboard below it- "HELL HAS NO THERMOSTAT!" complete with lurid flames ringing the picture.

The most annoying thing about anti-porn people is the way they use the following logic:
  1. Claim that porn causes sexually violent behaviour, criminal tendencies, etc.
  2. When challenged to produce evidence, cite studies showing that porn leads to an interest in more or raunchier porn.
  3. Assume that a "desensitization" to porn is the same thing as a "desensitization" to real-life rape and violence.
  4. Assume that a "desensitization" to real-life rape and violence will cause sexually violent behaviour, criminal tendencies, etc.
  5. Go back to step 1.
Big fucking circle.

They also think of it as an addiction, which is impossible. Addiction is a result of a chemical introduced into the system, and what they're describing is akin to some sort of obsessive-compulsive disorder, if anything. Regardless of what you call it, the problem is internal. Removing the external stimulus will not solve anything.

Of course, if they acknowledged that, then they couldn't even have a beef with porn in the first place, so I'm sure anyone raising this point is accused of trying to get mired "pointless semantics."

I can't imagine how they would design a billboard to be used in public against porno that wouldn't piss off about a million conservatives. An old man, looking at vaguely shaded girls on a computer screen, with a sign above saying, "it is that simple to identify future molestors"?

Also, as someone who actually did have sort of a pornography addiction, the actual sexual pleasure for me was only secondary; it had more to do with the fact that it was subversive, since I was doing it against the strong wishes of my mother, a devout Mormon.

Actually, to me it sounds like another no-name senator grabbing an issue to prove he actually has some sort of function in Washington. Members of congress are publicity whores, and grab any chance to show their supporters that they too are out there 'working for the public'.

I'm sure that's also true too, but these lawmakers like to accomplish all their goals in one go. Just because they do X to get Effect A doesn't mean they're not also trying to get Nasty Side Effect B as a nice 'fuck you, I'm the boss' bonus. They may love the money, but they also like the feeling of power they get when they shit all over our privacy and civil rights and get away with it. I think we need to stop them from getting their jollies fucking over the same people they swear to protect!

In a Wired News article about the same event, it was noted that the bus ads mentioned here say that "having sex with children is wrong". Not really related to porn at all.

linky

"The campaign should combat the messages of pornography by putting signs on buses saying sex with children is not OK, said Layden."

Ah yes, and then we get to the pleas for money from the Federal beast.

I must say that I do love the new term they introduced... 'erototoxins'. Somebody has to write that into a story.

"He's dead, Jim."

"Bones... what... killed this... man?"
