School Assembly - Armageddon round the corner

Pupils scared by asteroid spoof
An asteroid hitting the earth
Pupils were told an asteroid was on a collision course with Earth
Pupils were left in tears after a teacher told them that an asteroid was about to hit Earth and kill them all.

The spoof announcement was designed to teach 14-year-olds the importance of seizing the day but backfired after they became visibly frightened.

Keith Hogan, head teacher at St Matthew's RC High School in Moston, Manchester, said he regretted any distress caused to the 230 pupils.

The head of year behind the assembly "stunt" later moved to reassure them.

He had told the year nine students that the asteroid was on a "collision course".

It is also believed that the students were told that they should go home and say "final farewells" to their families.

Pupils 'reassured'

The teacher then admitted the story was a stunt aimed at underlining the theme of the assembly - "living each day to the full".

Head Mr Hogan said: "Obviously I regret the fact that any student was distressed by the content and delivery of the assembly.

"However, I am confident that the head of year acted appropriately and professionally in dealing with the incident.

"Following the assembly the head of year visited every year nine class and again told the students that the story was untrue and made every effort to ensure that those students who had been anxious were reassured."
I put this here to keep with the idea that N&P articles go where they belong, but I think it probably wants to go in OT as it's not what I'd call news.

Still, I'm not entirely sure what to make of it, is this a sign that we're too absorbed in the ideas of hollywood and that common sense is being lost in favour of film style ideas of instant destruction without prior knowledge?

Was it bad judgement? I know when we were in year 7, someone started a rumour that Saddam Hussain was going to gas Britain, but even so, I don't think many people believed it (there were some, yes, but not many). But surely when you're 14, you might have a little more awareness of things, some of our members are that age and I'm sure that they'd have a healthy scepticism of such things.

I suppose it's an issue of trust, I think if our head teacher had done that, we'd have believed him, as the idea of a joke seemed completely alien to him.

Maybe us Brit's are just gullible sods. At least, it would if those damn people at Oxford hadnt removed it from the dictionary. What? The chap down at the other end of the floor told me.

That is, without a doubt, one of the stupidest ideas I've ever seen implemented. The head teacher should be shit-canned immediately.

Sounds like what schools used to do in order to discourage DUIs. They'd get some volunteers and then stage a fake car accident (making the "victims" look as gruesome as possible, of course). The genius who came up with that in my city was shitcanned for it, since not a small number of the students subjected to this needed counseling. It didn't help that sometimes the staff forgot to tell them it wasn't real.

That's 230 school students who've just learned that the Man will lie to them whenever it suits his purposes. They got scared shitless, but received a most valuable life-lesson.

Jesus, what was he thinking? I don't know much about the UK's legal system, but in the US this guy would have his ass sued multiple times for mental distress. Stupid fucking idea.

"Today we're going to teach about seizing the day, by scaring the hot piss out of you!"

?

Maybe an acceptable lesson for seniors in high school, but not 14 year olds.
And that's still a big maybe...

I don't think it's a maybe. If somebody had tried that stunt here, the whole school probably would have taken it at face value, possibly with some students even committing suicide.

Your school isn't composed of very intelligent people, then. Come on, don't you people know that if an asteroid that big was going to hit Earth we'd have more than a few days' warning? :P

It reminds me of the Carlin diatribe about stupid people. Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of everyone is stupider than that.

This is by far the funniest thing I've heard all week. What kind of teachers think that lying about an ASTEROID coming to Earth will help students learn a valuable life lesson? I find it difficult to believe that this isin't just a really sadistic person looking to show all the kiddies who's the motherfucking alpha male in that school. OMFG, I can just imagine the look on the little kids' faces when they were told this bullshit. Crying their eyes out! They must all have the brain capacity of a slug to believe such a farfetched lie. Damn, I bet you the head teacher had many huge-ass maniacal laughs as he executed this evil scheme. One must admit, as a prank, this is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Oh, they learned a valuable life lesson —just not the one they planned on. 8)

Were any of the kids suspicous of the exercise? Because I'd think that if there was an asteroid that would kill them all, at least one kid would wonder why they didn't hear of it until the day it was supposed to hit.

Well, according to the article, all the students were told about the asteroid after being called together for an assembly. Now, the students might believe that word of the asteroid had been released while they were in class and the head teacher was just alerting all of them.

God, I hate that sentiment; it makes me want to puke. "Live every day like it's your last." What, empty my bank account, hit my boss in the face, and screw my kid's teacher on her desk?

How about "Don't let opportunities pass you by," huh? Something that's a little less stupid than "Hi class, I've gathered you all here today to remind you you're all a string of meat on a bone heading towards oblivion. Today you're here, tomorrow you're just a worm buffet. So I'd like to introduce you all to our special theme this week we like to call: Fuck Tomorrow. Because remember kids, the grim reaper isn't afraid to snatch you from your beds tonight."

This is undoubtedly one of the STUPIDEST stunts I have ever heard of, and I'm surprised they didn't fire the idiots who implemented it, and bring a class action suit against them for needless mental distress.

Like someone else said, my first thought was what if a kid committed suicide over this stunt?

un-fucking-believable. Leave it to a religious based school system to be the one who dreamed up this stunt.

Woulda been funny if the kids started to riot and set fire to things...

Anyway, I don't really blame the kids. They couldn't possibly imagine that the official staff of the school would call an assembly just to bullshit them about their impending doom.
If Religion and Politics were characters on a soap opera, Religion would be the one that goes insane with jealousy over Politics' intimate relationship with Reality, and secretly murder Politics in the night, skin the corpse, and run around its apartment wearing the skin like a cape shouting "My votes now! I suspect it was a regular 9-9.30 M/W/F morning assembly rather than a specially called one, that would have been going seriously too far.
