That was nice. But seriously, why do these boards attract the biggest idiots?
*snort* WoI.
If you'll notice, these new boards bring up the same old shit the old boards did. The Trekies just want a hang out where they will comfort each other with crap.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Well, Darkstar just now provided evidence for his 'non-metallic impact blaster sparks' condition, and looking at most of the screenshots i can't dispute it. So much for my great First Debate. http://www.strek-v-swars.net/phpBB2/vie ... =1892#1892
However, i think i may possibly have one faint glimmer of hope left...
Does anyone more experienced have any pointers for me? Like where i went wrong? I thought i was being rather moderate, but now i think i was too confident in the evidence i had.

Post screenshots of stormtroopers getting shot directly with NO sparks. There're several in TESB, for instance, during Lando, Chewie, and Leia's escape from Cloud City.

It only needs to work in the case of Leia's arm. He's shown it can happen, so even if it doesn't happen all the time, it could still be happening to her.
Or maybe i'm just not seeing the point since my judgement is apparently not very good...

It only needs to work in the case of Leia's arm. He's shown it can happen, so even if it doesn't happen all the time, it could still be happening to her.
But YOU can show that it doesn't ALWAYS happen. Without that universality to fall back on, all he's really proven is "it can happen". It's still in the realm of possibility that Leia got hit with a direct shot.
Which means, after that point is hashed out, there STILL needs to be other evidence. The severity of her wound, for instance, or the effects on the wall behind her arm.
The other thing to remember is the Leia-arm incident really doesn't prove anything itself, because immediately afterwards the stormie that shot Leia is blasted in the head, and is sent flying backwards. Leia, conversely, was not subject to any significant change in momentum due to the blast.
Which means that it proves nothing in terms of high-end estimates. It serves as a low-end, nothing more.

If you just want to show up Darkie, and you've truly lost this debate, I recommend claiming that it just goes to show that SW people have skeletons made out of metal.
Actually, though, if you've seriously lost then you should take something out of this: if you aren't actually sure that something is the way you say it is, don't construct an entire house of cards that relies on that single argument. Build the crux of your argument with redundancy, so even if your opponent refutes a single bit of evidence it does little damage to the whole. This is also good even if you ARE sure, and since it makes your opponent seem weak and impotent, and since if your opponent nitpicks one piece of evidence you can always say, "That's great. Now refute the other 3 pieces of evidence I brought up and buy yourself a case."

And, ultimately, just remember that Leia's incident was ONE example out of many. MoO's advice is sound... redundancy. If you need to, simply concede. Yeah, that's right, I said concede. "You're right, Darkstar, it sure looks like Leia's arm got hit. You've successfully established a low-end estimate of blaster rifle firepower. Now, how about some high-end estimates?"
Remember people, Darkstar's modus operandi is to change the subject of the debate so that it focuses on the minutae of the points that were originally raised in support of a larger argument.
Take this "Leia's arm" thing. It was obviously raised in an effort to prove thatr blasters are weak, hence the larger claim is that blasters are weak: a claim which is easily shredded by looking at examples where they blew chunks out of concrete walls. His technique is to focus so much on the details of a single point (and quite fittingly, he has an entire page devoted to ths "Leia's arm" incident) that you forget it is what would ordinarily be a single line-item in a long list of evidence, all of which must be taken into account if one is to synthesize a theory of blaster properties.
In short, he tries to bog you down in the details, so that you miss the forest for the trees. That's why he's fond of super-long posts; by the time you're done slogging through one, you've forgotten what the hell you were arguing about.

I noticed. Warwinner came in, and on his second post claimed that the asteroids Slave 1 fragmented were less than a kilometer, and that the asteroid Voyager "vaporized" (note: it would have fragmented it, not vaped, so he's lying) was 1 km (bigger than even DarkStar's 400m estimate!).
I've been following the posts over on the new site, and all I can really say is "Wow." Ignorance truly is bliss over there, especially regarding Darkstar and Captain Newland. I wasn't sure if all the stories about him were true (I didn't start reading any of the VS debate info online until after they had gone from SD.net), even with all the glaring inaccuracies, inconsistancies, and outragous claims on Darkstar's website. Attempting to read through a Darkstar post is almost impossible, he tries everything he possibly can to try to confuse the subject of discussion.
And Newland still posts the same thing over and over again in regards to the turbolaser energy capability being only a few thousand TJ MAX, even though those calculations are for determining the MINIMUM amount of energy required to vaporize the asteroid. Is this such a hard concept (obviously it is for him)?
Anyways, just thought I would say that those of you debating over there are truly amazing and I can't believe you actually take the time and effort to debate these people. That you can take the time and effort to go through all that makes you truly brave people indeed.
How much fucking bitch-slapping does Scooter fucking need? Its as if all the contradictory evidence to his blatant bullshit we throw at him goes right over his head, and he is back afterwards to continue on spouting the same bullshit. I mean, this "EU is not really Star Wars" idiocy is a true fucking gem, it is the damn crux of his ignorant bullshit and he preaches it vehemently despite the massive holes in his argument and the goddamn truckloads of evidence against him.

This is why I have mostly retired from SWvST. All the intelligent Pro-Trek debators retired from the main debate(Alyeska, Chris, etc). And all you're left with now are retards who won't concede a tiny point.

I found this more than odd - when he was arguing the entire thing about flesh sparking, he posted other pictures - of people, Ewoks, etc getting shot - with far greater effects than what happened to Leia's arm. In other words, in order to argue his 'low-powered blaster shot' spiel, he had to post pictures in which greater firepower is demonstrated.
