What is Love?

Post by ReinnResauq »

If this thread has been done before, forgive me and please lock, but if not...

How do you define love? How does romantic love differ from other varieties? What is the purpose of love or does it even have one and is just a positive extreme of the caring evolution has selected for in higher vertebrates?
The gift of Superman is the same in his universe as ours. It's not about his powers, his costume, his persona, it's about the using the gifts he has to help people. We all have gifts too, maybe we can't leap tall buildings in a single bound, but maybe we're good with math, maybe we're charming. We can use our gifts -whatever they are- to help people. We just need to make that choice. And Superman shows us that it's possible.

Love is a chemical reaction in the brain, not really different from large quantities of chocolate. ;)

Love is when two people share a kindrid understand and respect for one another. It is a blending of personalities when two people fill the gaps in one another and make each other happy. Love, when properly diagnosed, is also one of the most beautiful of human emotions.

God is lvoe. ;)

But seriously, love covers a whole gamut of affectionate emotional attachments. Romantic love is affection with the intent to have sex, and usually the want to breed and raise kids with the person you're with.

To those that will think "it's just chemistry in the brain" is some sort of value judgment, demeaning it, well, think about what "chemistry in the brain" actually is. It's the source of all human emotion, that chemistry is what allows us to feel alive and has been fashioned that way through millions of years of evolution. Don't think "chemicals in the brain" aren't special, they're vital, a huge part of you.

Love is, at its most basic level, a chemical reaction that leads to massive increases in what I like to call "red-hot monkey love." Love is also often the motivation behind what I like to call "being a fucking stupid bastard".

There's several types of love too, mind you.

Yeah...but how can I get this on tap without being Keanu :P .

In the most clinical fashion it's a reaction in the brain.

Other thenthat...it's your own personal definition of ana emotion that is at time most wonderful and heart rending.

Love is what you feel when you look at another person and fervently hope that this person will have the best, happiest life that he or she can possibly have. Parents often (but not always, unfortunately) feel that way when they look at their children. Husbands sometimes (but not always) feel that way when they look at their wives. Teenagers think they know what it is, but at their age, it's mostly hormones and poetry.

Wow ! Thanks for the laugh I needed that

And Darth Wong has it correct.

I say that love is knowing you want that persons life to be the happiest it can be (as Darth Wong said) and knowing you want to spend the rest of your life with the other person.

You will only really understand love when you fall into it and when you have children you'll really know what love is.

Darth, the comment about teenagers is so true ! You made me laugh as well ;)

I'd agree to that, except that I have been in love for a while and I still don't really know it is. I know that I had thought I'd been in love before and this is so much stronger than anything ever before.

Love is the when the happiness of another person is of paramount importance to your own.

Good, then it is probably love. Can you see yourself growing old with this person? If so it's probably love for sure.

There's a difference between the crazy romantic love that probably is mostly chemicals and hormones and the deeper bonds of attachment that probably have a lot more to do with choice and conscious thought.

Love is the most dangerous of all feelings and you should strive to be feared rather than loved.

Other than that, I agree with everyone else on the chemicals etc.

 Sounds to me like you've been hurt a lot, unless that was just a joke. If not then in your case it's likely that you haven't really experienced TRUE love if you think of it that way. JMO!
