Origin of the name 'Vader'

Post by SCVN 2812 »

With the introduction of three new Darths with the prequels, each of which has an ominous sounding name (Darth Maul, Sidious, Tyrannus) the question popped into my head about the significance of Darth Vader's name. I suppose it could be missing a sylable like Sidious (InSidious?) though (In)Vader somehow doesn't seem fitting.

Vader comes from the German word for 'father' which is a different spelling.

But it is spelt correctly as Dutch for 'father'.

Personally I think Vader's sounding like 'Invader' is fitting enough for the Darth X continuity.

Except that in the original screenplay, Vader was significantly younger than Luke Skywalker (who's role was similar to Obi-Wan's role in the finished movie.) The character who would eventually evolve into Luke was Anakin Starkiller, and his father, Kane, was still alive at the beginning of the script (although he died halfway through.)

It's fairly obvious from the original screenplays that Vader was not originally supposed to have any relation with the hero. The one thing I'm not sure about is, did Lucas decide to make Vader Luke's father before ANH was filmed (but after writing the first and second drafts, both of which featured the hero's father in a speaking role,) or was it just a retcon that he inserted into the sequel?

Actually, nothing will be more fitting. Darth Vader -=> Dark Invader. Or haven't you noticed that his helmet has the shape similar to the tip of a penis? :P

Bah, I was going to say that Vader = Father in dutch! :p

I can imagine how silly it sounded in dutch. "I am your Vader!" "Uh, no, that's your name."

Well, in the dutch version of Star Wars, Vader's name is "Dark Vador".. Obviously they did that to prevent confusion in ANH, and to later prevent spoilers in TESB.

A little off-topic...

Personally, I think that originally Darth was meant to be his name. Obi-Wan says "A young jedi named Darth Vader." And he's constantly refered to as Lord Vader which would make one think that Darth was not meant to be a title originally. Though now it is.

Perhaps all Sith take the first name of Darth as an honour thing?

How about "Dart Cestuous"?

Over a theforce.net someone found an old copy of Lucas' high school yearbook and a burly-looking jock-type guy in it was named Gary Vader. Did this guy beat up GL or something?

Except that names like Clement (Inclined to be lenient or merciful.
Mild: 'clement weather') and Disputable have an 'In' on the front to negativise them. It would be like calling yourself Darth Destructible, Darth Vincible or Darth Defatigable.

Hmm...if a Sith master got to name his apprentice, naming him/her Darth Significant could be a nice ego-boost :)
