Who would win in a battle between the fictional characters of Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey? Both characters are the captains of a 32 gun frigate armed with carronades. The battle will take place on the open sea.
In another scenario, we can place both captains on 74 gun ships of the line. Would the outcome be the same, different?
Battle between two Napoleonic war-era British captains.

Aubrey wins man, no contest.

In all likelyhood, I'd give this to Hornblower. He's got a genius for inovative and unusual. Aubery is good but doesn't have the same genius.Commander LeoRo wrote:Who would win in a battle between the fictional characters of Horatio Hornblower and Jack Aubrey? Hm... Well, does Hornblower have any accomplishments to match the taking of the CacaFuego (Yes, I know what it means )? Aubrey was commanding a small brig against a decent frigate in that action.Stormbringer wrote:In all likelyhood, I'd give this to Hornblower. He's got a genius for inovative and unusual. I think Hornblower may be more effective in a ground operation against Aubrey, where his innovative tactics may be of more use. In a stand up frigate to frigate fight I think Aubrey has the sheer tenacity required to win.

Atropos and the capture of the Castilla is fairly comparable.
Hornblower is as tough. He took the Sutherland into the teeth of four ships of the lines. He can fight an equal fight and come out on top.

Perhaps you are correct. Hornblower did lead a daring counterattack against the spaniards who captured the HMS Renown. He used the prize crews of a few captured ships to board and retake the Renown. That is definitely comparable and perhaps superior to Aubrey's accomplishments.
