Summary: Dutch researchers tracked around 2500 people from ages 14 to 24 and found that regular cannibis smoking increased the risk of psychosis by 6% over four years, and by 25% for someone who was predisposed to psychosis to begin with. One of the researchers had the following to say:
One of the authors of the study, carried out by researchers from the Netherlands, said that although cannabis triggered psychosis in a minority of people, this was a good reason to legalise it, not ban it, so that government can promote advice and information, as it does on alcohol.

Read this in the Daily Mail at lunchtime (hey, it was at Mackie D's and was a free newspaper, I won't touch that rag of a paper normally) so immediately questioned its integrity.
I'm going to hunt down the journal with this in and read it myself.

Anyways, I'm of the theory that MJ usage doesn't cause psychosis, it's just that psychotics are more predisposed to tokin' da ganja. Figgers they try for a post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Don't be hasty now. Scientists are to be of sound mind and unbiased. Unlike gov't programmes in the US, for instance, it's very probable that this data has integrity. I'm still going to get the full paper and read it and then judge.
Besides, these things don't dictate policy. They merely inform, not rant about how even irrelevant results warrant this stupid War on Drugs.

I'm willing to bet they tested to make sure they didn't have traces of other major drugs in them, but it's a variable you'd have to take into account anyway.

I'm inclined to treat this one less skeptically because it's coming from the Netherlands, where they've had a national policy of honesty about marijuana for decades. Still, 6% seems like a really high figure, considering there are tens of millions of marijuana users in the United States alone and we don't have hundreds of thousands of people becoming psychotic here (no comments about the election, please).

I find it hard to imagine any of the cannabis users I know (yes, this is anecdotal, I'm not intending to refute here) being likely to turn psychotic. Depressed, anxious, &c., I could imagine - but psychotic?

People with problems with depression are probably more likely to get problems with alcohol abuse, but it doesn't mean that the booze caused the depression in the first place. I want to know if people with psychotic tendencies are more likely to smoke marijuana in the first place, or if the happy weed really does cause psychosis in some people.

What does the study use as the definition of "psychosis"? Because I looked it up at dictionary.com, and they listed this:
A severe mental disorder, with or without organic damage, characterized by derangement of personality and loss of contact with reality and causing deterioration of normal social functioning.
I wouldn't be surprised if 6% of any group had an increase in psychosis over the course of four years, especially since we don't know what constitutes "an increase". These results don't necessarily mean that there's a risk of becoming Norman Bates through smoking pot.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

It might be that many people suffering from psychosis are never diagnosed with it and that behaviour might not be seen as psychotic(though it could be seen as negative/weird) by their peers depending on the form it takes.
What I'm saying is that many people can probably become psychotic and never know about it, I'm also sure there are degrees of psychosis.

According to the article, psychosis has a pretty broad definition.
The study aimed to answer a question that has been unsettling psychiatrists for some time. People with psychosis, whose symptoms include hallucinations, paranoia, hearing voices and a persecution complex, are more likely than not to have a marijuana habit.

Assuming the study wasn't conducted by absolute morons, they would have used a control group to compare to the active group.
