80 year old makes machine gun out of drill.
An engineer from Hämeenlinna, Finland in his 80's built a functioning automatic weapon from a battery-powered drilling machine. The problems showed up when he went to the authorities to apply for a license for his weapon.
- Automatic weapons are not legal. The gun was taken away from his home, the man was interrogated and the case went forward as a gun crime, told inspector Kari Suominen from Hämeenlinna police department.
Anyone who has drilled a stone wall can imagine, that from a percussion drill you can construct a firing mechanism that beats like a machinegun.
The drilling machine gun's ROF was 420 shots per minute. It used .22 caliber bullets fed from a metal belt.
The gun-hobbyist engineer had been developing his gadget for a couple of decades.
- It was made out of whatever pipes, really finely and skillfully. I have to raise my hat. The parts were not from other guns, however. It was made from pieces of metal freely available in the market, the police told.

Thus proving that, given people determined enough, there's no way you can actually ban all guns

Poor guy, The judge in this case needs to show some thought, not like you can throw someone in jail that old for what was basicly a hobby, make him downconvert it to single shot and send him on his way

I don't know if you'd consider it combat-worthy; there's a difference between being functional and being easy enough to maintain to make it a reliable weapon in the field. But yes, you can use machine tools to make parts for firearms just as you can anything else made of steel if you have the skill and adequate material.Darth_Zod wrote:nice to know i can make a deadly, combat worthy weapon out of mostly common household items.

"Gets out"? Nothing in the original (unattributed, unlinked) article said that he was sent to prison over this, merely that the gun was taken away.Master of Ossus wrote:That's seriously badass. I'd buy him a beer when he gets out.

No, we need senior citizen control, because obviously they have too much time once they retire and they're up to no good.Col. Crackpot wrote:which is why we need Lathe control, Bridgeport control and cordless drill control laws.

Meh. I said in HAB that I could start manufacturing PPsh's at home, and I meant it. But it's not enough of a hobby to risk doing--though Skimmer pointed out (correctly), that they would be legal if the receiver was only 80% machined.

It's a drill, creating a mechanism to turn it into single-shot would be probably harder than building the whole thingMr Bean wrote:Poor guy, The judge in this case needs to show some thought, not like you can throw someone in jail that old for what was basicly a hobby, make him downconvert it to single shot and send him on his way

All you need is Ammo. I heard an ineresting story of crims here in NZ making firearms in the prison machine shop, all they needed was the ammo. Tribesmen in Papua New Guinea make single shots out in the wop wops with nothing more than piping and scrap metal.
Hell you can make primitive cruise misisles in your back yard if you have the money and engineering skills so automatic firearms shouldnt be a problem for anyone with patience and the desire to do it.

Fortunately, very few have the patience and desire for that sort of thing. You can never eliminate firearms entirely, but you can make them more inconvenient to acquire, so that it isn't worth the effort for most people.Stuart Mackey wrote:All you need is Ammo. Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!
