Joe wrote:Is this really such a good idea? To play devil's advocate here, the only reason society progresses is because the people with the old, outdated ideas die. I mean, look at race relations in America; let's not kid ourselves into believing civil rights legislation came along and suddenly things started getting better. The real reason is because the dinosaurs with the outdated ideas who wanted to maintain the status quo started dying. And I don't think this rule applies to social progress exclusively, either; I imagine it would apply to the sciences and governance as well; Einstein was younger than 40 when he developed the theory of general relativity, and Jefferson and Madison also were both younger than 40 when they wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, respectively. I'm not saying old people are completely worthless, or that scientists somehow lose their competency once they reach a certain age, I'm saying that you need younger generations to be born and older generations to die to maintain human progress. The older generation tends to try and defend the status quo, the younger generation challenges it.
I think you're on to something here. I'd be willing to that that the rate of progress (social, scientific, etc) is inversely proportional to our lifespan. Everything would slow down if we started living to 1000.

There would be economic turmoil as well. Imagine companies having to pay out pensions for over 900 years. Of course the age of retirement would have to be raised, but all the people currently retired would continue to draw benefits for a loooong time. I think you would see that the concentration of wealth would increase and property values would skyrocket.

Hmmm, I wonder if a 1000 year life sentence would be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

But, if the process doesn't change the way the human body ages, or some really strong aphrodisiac isn't developed, you'd probably spend over 90% of life being impotent. Could you imagine how hard it would be to get hard at 950?

Holy shit. And here Leonization was just something they'd created for ShadowRun.

Yet again, FASA's creative team has guessed the future.

I don't think that our rate of progress is inversely proportional to our life span. After all, we've discovered more about the world and science in the last 50 years than in the entire 5000 years before that and our lifespans have increased substantially.

With lifespans of that length, your Sargeant could have easily started his military career with Henry V's Agincourt campaign.

And if he survived all that up until now, he'd probably be the greatest soldier of all time.

Would this have any effect on militaries? Perhaps more troops? Then again, that far ahead into the future we would probably be less dependant on humans for the battlefield.

Good point. Would that still hold if our lifespans increased to 1000 years, or would my predicted drag effect kick in at some point? [Mr Burns] Tell you what, if our rate of progress in tech and social fields keeps on increasing in the next 1000 years, I'll owe you a coke. [/Mr. Burns]
