Tell me about it. Nearly played warhammer dawn of war. Played like RTW 2 weeks after I got DoW, + vice city I also had laying around. Bought HL2, played that a bit but put it in the freeze untill I get a better videocard.Stravo wrote:FUCK. What is it with all the good games coming out now? I haven't seen this many good PC games come around in such a small time frame. First RomeTW and Halflife 2 (Eagerly waiting for my shipment to arrive) and now I think I may add this game to my after Christmas shopping list. Fuck all of you for posting such great reviews that have me playing games again after months of not touching the stuff.
I've never really found myself wanting for ships yet- in the sense that I can always capture a good one. Admittedly, I'm only 3 years into my pirates career, but I have my Brig of War, the Vengeance, fully upgraded to my knowledge with all the bells and whistles, and with 24 guns. A perfect pirate ship. I recently captured a Fast Galleon, but it doesn't look better stats wise. The Kernel wrote:Who else thinks this game REALLY needs the ability to buy and customize your warships a la Uncharted Waters?
I have a War Galleon which has 32 guns, but I like having the option to customize stuff. Wouldn't it be sweet if you could build a ship from scratch, select the hull size, building materials, cannons, etc?Vympel wrote:I've never really found myself wanting for ships yet- in the sense that I can always capture a good one. My main objective now is to capture a Ship of the Line
HMS Victory wouldn't make all that good of a pirate ship. Too slow; she cannot force an engagement with a merchantman.phongn wrote:Bah, you know you really want to be able to capture a 1st-rate like HMS Victory rather than those puny 48-gunned ships
Also, make sure to have the appropriate jewels (either a ring and a necklace, so make sure to get both) from those guys at the tavern, the daughter you are trying to court will ask about it soon after your first successful dance. The Kernel wrote:Get a lot of fame, do a lot of dancing, then eventualy the Governor's daughter will get kidnapped, you can rescue her and you will elope.Vympel wrote:How do you get married anyway?
You are to slow with that ship. A Royal Sloop is the best ship because it is fast in a battle and on the overland map. A Large Frigate get a lot of guns - it will kill often in 1-2 hits - I prefer to capture ship intact - you'll get alot of money that way. The AI in land battles need an upgrade. It is to easy to get a unit close to the gate and the AI is to predictable. Setting up a deathtrap is very easy.Lord of the Farce wrote:
Ship of Choice: Large Frigate (but only because I haven't found any Ship of the Line... yet), while having Trade (and the occasional Treasure) Galleons tag along as consumable and troop carriers (for land battles).
Going solely by the in-game encyclopedia, the main sailing difference between the Sloop and Frigate is that the Sloop has a tighter turning radius, and the Frigate has (one) more "Best Sailing Points".Vympel wrote:Bah, Royal Sloop is too puny. I agree with the Frigate. It's rated "fast", after all, and as long as it has that rating, I can force battle with any worthwhile target ...
You need to start a new game with Journeyman Captain (or above) difficulty level to be able to select the era. I've just started a new game at the last era, hoping to find a Ship of the Line. Of course, for the most part, I feel kind of sorry for the Spanish...How come I couldn't pick the era when I started the game, anyway? Hell, I really couldn't pick much of anything, IRRC.
I haven't played that game myself, but from what the website for it describes, PR2 is a trade simulation while SMP! is a pirate simulation (with trade thrown in, though that's not where the big bucks are).Enigma wrote:But how does this game compare to Port Royale 2?
Well, if you really want speed, isn't the Mail Runner the best choice? Then again, at the harder difficulty levels, enemy ships will give you quite serious pounding with their more accurate and more damaging volleys.Thunderfire wrote:Hmm enemies have managed to outrun me when I had a frigate. I was able to cath up when I switched to a royal sloop.Vympel wrote:Bah, Royal Sloop is too puny. I agree with the Frigate. It's rated "fast", after all, and as long as it has that rating.
PR2, you can trade be a pirate or a privateer in the carribean. Ships there range from pinnance (sp?) to the mighty but slow Ship-of-the-Line. (I've got about three fleets of a total of 26 to 30 heavy warships)Lord of the Farce wrote:<snip>
