www.POE-News.com wrote:In an appearance before Congress in February, when the controversy over Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl moment was at its height, Federal Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell laid some startling statistics on U.S. senators.
The number of indecency complaints had soared dramatically to more than 240,000 in the previous year, Powell said. The figure was up from roughly 14,000 in 2002, and from fewer than 350 in each of the two previous years. There was, Powell said, “a dramatic rise in public concern and outrage about what is being broadcast into their homes.”
What Powell did not reveal—apparently because he was unaware—was the source of the complaints. According to a new FCC estimate obtained by Mediaweek, nearly all indecency complaints in 2003—99.8 percent—were filed by the Parents Television Council, an activist group.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is any way the Fcc could claim harrassment.....
You have to realize that most Christian "moral values" behaviour is not really about "protecting" anyone; it's about their desire to send a continual stream of messages of condemnation towards people whose existence offends them. - Darth Wong alias Mike Wong

And why is THAT a big deal, you Bush-apologist fucktard? You think an exposed nipple will scar children's minds forever?
You think it's a good thing?
Will it kill a child? No. But you really can't make an arguable case to me to say that was an OK thing to air. Many people disagree with such an action, and it's clearly indecent to a large portion of Americans, wouldn't you agree?

So.... are you saying we should have television shows on public airwaves that show nudity all over the place just because it's natural?

I think it's an ethically neutral thing, as in "no harm done". But thanks for demonstrating that your first instinct is to resort to black/white thinking. How unusual for a Bush-apologist.

I just did. Now prove that I'm wrong and that it did harm.

"Appeal to Popularity" fallacy.
And, did I say anything about Bush???
You are agreeing with his idiotic dipshit-Puritan Victorian-era policies.

Why not? What's so bad about it? I can understand something like hardcore porn being restricted, but a simple breast?
Mainly because I'm guessing over half of the country would still think that's indecent. If most people still believe it's undecent, don't you think we should respect that opinion?

Well shit, Europe has a lax view to nudity unlike the US and I've seen more than my fair share of breasts and male genitals on TV even before I was at the age of consent and it didn't affect me. I mean, why should it? Are there studies done to show how many 6-year olds turn to rapists after seeing nipples on TV before the watershed?
I have experience with this kind of thing from radio here. After EDGE got granted its license (at the expense of another pre-existing station [who were offered a share of our programming slots but turned it down]), they lodged several thousand bullshit complains to the ABA about us. Any time there was even a teeeny-tiny infringement on air, they'd lodge a stack of complaints.
All of which were deemed malicious and unsubstantiated by the ABA. Maybe the FCC should take a leaf out of the ABA's book and look at who is lodging the complaint along with what the complaint is.

Well, what do you mean affect you? I suppose you don't think it's affected you in an adverse way because you've grown up under the impression that it's no big deal. My simple point is that others would just disagree with that.
And why should it affect people? Because your exposing children to something that some parents would deem unecessary and indecent. When you tune into the Super Bowl your expecting to watch football and funny commercials, not a nude breast.

Based on what data? A complaints system which has been hijacked so that a single special-interest group makes 99.8% of the complaints?
If most people still believe it's undecent, don't you think we should respect that opinion?
No. They must show justification for censorship. Saying that you don't like something is not enough reason to ban it or persecute people for making it. You must show that it is harmful.

Hell, I don't know about you but i'd call it a perk if i got nude breast whilst watching the superbowl
Would have been better if it was from one of those hot cheerleaders or something though.
