As the last Chaos forces in the area melted away (one of them literally), Adivan breathed a sigh of relief. Hanging the melta back on his shoulder, he watched as a pair of sotmrtroopers cautiously approached what remainined of the Blademaster, and turned flamers on it. A high-pitched, inhuman scream echoed off the walls, and the troopers crigned and covered their ears, but they did their duty. In moments, the thing's remains had been reduced to ashes on the wind.

The Blademaster's weapon, however, was a different matter. Gesturing the other troopers away from it, Adivan cautiously walked over and picked it up. No trace of the taint. Might as well keep this; no sense in wasting a good weapon. As he secured it to his backpack, he smield briefly, thinking of a comical figure he must look like, with weapons hanging off every part of him. It passed quickly, though; there was no time for humour right now.

As he pulled out his depleted plasma pistols and began replacing the ammo tanks, he opened a channel to the other Inquisitors on this mission, and reported the events of the past... what... two minutes? It seemed like a lifetime.

"Upon landing, I and some Stormtroopers engaged a small force of what appear to be traitor stormtroopers, possibly in service to Tzeentch, the Changer of the Ways. Our transport was destroyed, but we had successfully eliminated most of the initial resistance when something else arrived. I don't know what it was, maybe a demon-host, but it was fast and it was sing a power-sword and some kind of daemon-possessed knife. From what I saw, the knife drains the life from whatever it cuts, and feeds it to the wielder. I was able to destroy the thing's body with a melta-gun, but the knife was retrieved by one of the Traitors and removed from the area. I have retrieved the sword; it appears untainted, although further exmination would no doubt be wise. I plant to keep it in my possession until it can be examined by another qualified Inquisitor."

Across the manufactorum, the icons detonated with brutal force, battering the surviving Borean troopers. Prius turned and watched with fascinated curiosity as a severed arm flew by him, still clutching the stock of a lasrifle. Odd, that.

Michaelson staggered toward him. "What do we do?" the trooper asked. Prius stared at him for a moment, shell-shocked. For some reason, the words and sounds he was hearing were distorted. He shook his head, trying to clear it, then reached up to tap his vox... only to have his hand touch charred flesh where a las shot burned away part of the helmet as well as his ear. He looked at Michaelson. "Get me a vox operator. We have to get this under control."

Control. There is no fear in an honorable death, but victory honors the Emperor above all other things, and right now the Rifles were getting hammered.

"This is Novum to all forces; Inquisitor Gix's spearhead is advancing too quickly and Commissar Ristani's spearhead is bogged down. All troops not currently engaged should attempt to sieze the Manufactorum."

"This is Kruger to all forces; My team is pinned down in sector 59. Our transport was taken out by RPG fire. Request immediate backup."

"Fuck me!" Hethor roared as he divided behind some machinery. One of the navy boys was too slow and cut to pieces by the hail of gunfire. The chaotics were coming in strong.

Severa sprung up from behind another fabricator, her bolter errupting in her hands. Two navy boys hurled grenades blindly, which gave errupting in front of the Chaos troops who were pushing ahead with a leap frog advance.

"Emperor take them all!" Hethor yelled. He rolled out, plasma gun at the ready. He poured a hail of plasma fire at two heretics, missing but splattering them with molten steel. He rolled to the other side and fired both plasma and bolt pistol. A plasma burst incinerated a heretic's skull. He rolled back into cover. Those chaos boys knew how to do supression fire. That trick was going to get him hit again and he didn't want to depend on the damn conversion field from to keep him from getting fried.

There was a screeching sound and a Valkyrie came crashing out of the sky in the middle of the Guard formation. A winged creature screeched in triumph and more fell out of the sky from the shockwave.

Adivan's voice crackled over the vox. "Acknowledged, Kruger. My stormtroopers and I are nearby, moving to assist. If any of your troopers spot that knife, I want it destroyed immediately."

Gix fired a plasma volley and dodged back out of the doorway. His men were going to get killed if he didn't do something, but they fire was just too heavy. He needed room to act. And then he remembered the tanglefoot grenades.

With a wave of psychic force he sent them into to vast room to detonated in front of his troops, turning the area into a tangled mess of gravity differentials. That should buy them some time against a frontal assault. The Inquisitor drew his force rod and skirted around the cadaverous assemly area. His people needed a flanker and he was the only one available. He wouldn't let them down.

To put it bluntly, the regiment was an Emperor-bedamned mess. Casualties had not been tremendously heavy, but they had taken some serious hits to the command structure and the troopers were disorganized to the warp and back. He had two companies commanded by raw lieutenants... not that all the officers weren't raw to some degree or another, but damnation. He stood near the entrance to the manufactorum working to bring order to the chaos when the Valkyrie tumbled from the sky...

The Inquisition might be hell on wheels when working to root out the heretics and other corruption, but their capacities in terms of military organization were seriously lacking, he concluded. They were engaged with serious opposition, enemy troopers easily superior in tactics and training to his poor Boreans. He chewed on his lower lip for a moment as Michaelson gazed up in horror at the winged demon.

"What is that?" the trooper asked.

"The face of the enemy, trooper. As long as it's not coming down on us, it's not our immediate concern."

Green flame spread in curtains across all the doors, cutting Gix off from the rest of the world. "There. We have some privacy. Good morning, Inquisitor." Said a voice from the shadows.

"Sir, the Inquisitor's party has got the enemy pinned down somehow! Near the second entrance!" one of the scouts reported breathlessly.

Prius turned, his mind turning over to what precious reserves he had left. "Tell Bravo company to send everything they have to hammer them."

There was nobody around to tell him the folly of committing his final reserves to action, which was probably just as well. He probably would have shot them.

A hail of pulse and starfire cut into the wretched. Several cultists swarmed out of nowhere to engage the interlopers,

"The weak cannot fight, the lord of pestiulance makes us strong!"

Their stench was overwhleming, Still the Firewarriors, in their powersuits and the Deathjesters were in truth no new comers to close combat.

Leaping out of the cockpit of the Veneom, throwing the plasma grenade, knocking back the cultists. It was not that cait thought they could overwhelm him or his allies. He just didn't want to be exposed to their rot infested bvlood.

The invisible tangle fields were a death trap. Charging Path troopers were caught, slowed as if swimming through molasses and butchered by the Inquisitional troops. Too bad the enemy still had a lot of shooters. But it bought them time, precious time.

D'eckor considered an advance as he ignored the trapped and dying Path troopers to gun down the living. Severa could lay down effective supporting fire, but she wasn't the gunman that Hethor was. He methodically downed men with bolt pistol and plasma fire. Two las bolts penetrated his conversion field, but failed to burn through the flak jacket and mesh armour shirt he wore under it. He ignored the pain of those minor wounds. Soon the moment for his advance would come.

Gix felt the enormous power of chaos sorcery wash over him. He wove iron defences around him, marshalling all of his reserves for this confrontation. "Against my strength, you shall not prevail. I have felled Chaos Magi before and I have only grown stronger. Against me you shall perish and be cast into the Darkness you have embraced."

Adivan was almost surpised at the ease with which the enmy's rearguard fell to his bolter. After fighting traitorous stormtroopers and that damnable 'Blademaster' thing, he had half-expected them to slide out of the way or simply get back up again.

As he ran past their shredded corpses, a glance told him why they hadn't. It was clear that these troops were much less heavily equipped; local cultists, perhaps. They wore crude flak vests, barely sufficient to stop autogun rounds, let alone bolter shells or las-fire, and their own weapons were of similar quality.

Well, no time for sight-seeing. With an energy blade in one hand, a boltgun in the other, and half a dozen stormtroopers on his heels, Inquisitor Adivan stormed into the rear of the Chaos forces assaulting Kruger's position. Dozens of cultists fell screaming, wreathed in fire, as the Stormtroopers' flamers spoke; more were shredded by Metalstorm and Infero rounds from Adivan's boltgun, or collapsed with smoking holes punched through them by hellgun fire. Still, Adivan knew he had no hope of defeating them alone; he was gambling that the confusion caused by his arrival would allow Kruger's forces to join him and finish them off. He opened a vox channel to Kruger.

"Inquisitor Kruger, this is Adivan. We are assaulting the Chaos forces from the rear. Now might be a good time to join in."

With a roar, the men of B Company of the Borean Rifles opened fire on the entangled chaos stormtroopers, lasrifles snapping shots at them. The Rifles had been hammered and abused for the past two days, and finally they could come to grips with an immobilized enemy, the hated and feared devils of chaos...

"Oh, is that what you say when I drop in for a friendly chat? For shame, Inquisitor."

A figure materialised at the edge of his vision. A tall, surprisingly unscarred human male, with blond hair and blue-no, purple- green, blue again- eyes clad in all-black and holding a force rod with Chaotic insignia patterned on it.

"You seem to be doing remarkably well against my forces. I thought this world practised Freedom of Religion?"

"Very much obliged, Inquisitor Adivan." A group of about 15 people, humans and Kroot, retreated towards Adivan's position.

Cait was in for a shock as a giant, winged form dropped onto his ship.

The counter attack gave Hethor the opening he had been looking for. Severa and her navy boys poured on the covering fire as Hethor charged foreward. Some bright boy tried to blow him away and got plasma blast in the head for his pains. Hethor's left hand went back and drew the storied blade across his back. It was his time now and to stand against him was to perish.

A brutal slice with the saber opened one Path trooper from shoulder to hip in a diagonal line. The next was blown to ash by his plasma pistol. The third fired wildly and lost his left arm to a slash. He fell away in a spray of blood. Hethor hacked through his spine. He was among them now, protected by armour and conversion field. He began to roll up the enemy. Caught between Severa's boys and the Boreans', the Path troopers were easy prey for the predator in their midst.

Hethor was in for a shock when the Path troopers he was assaulting suddenly nealt down and cut their own throats.

"What the hell?"

Suddenly his head hurt, and he felt something warm trickling down from his nose...

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.

The Daemon appeared.

"The enemy is retreating, commissar," the vox crackled.

"Fortify your position and await further orders," Prius said before signing off. He handed the vox-speaker back and contemplated the situation. They were digging in and could hold the manufactorum against further attack, but with the manpower on hand he had serious doubts as to their ability to seize the whole facility and still retain any form of usable striking power. He looked at the vox operator. "Update Inquisitor Novum as to our status and request further orders."

If commanded, he would flog his troops through the manufactorum until they were dead to the last man, but he would prefer that there be a sensible strategic objective in mind for such an act.

Gix probed the image, trying to acertain its reality. He had a few tricks in store for this heretical monster. "You have betrayed humanity for the cheap promises of an abomination. You have turned your back on the Emperor's Light and embraced Damnation. I will deliver the doom you have chosen."

With that Gix raised his force rod and poured devastating, pyrokinetic force back along the warp trails of the originator of this sorcery. If he was realy here or not it would make no difference. In a moment he would feel Jolan's terrible wrath as it traced back the route of his sending through the warp.

The figure sighed and held up a hand. A rune glowed infront of him, and all the energy directed at him was sucked into the Warp.
"Is force the only thing you people understand? No matter. Others have learned the folly of attacking me just as you shall."

"Ristani, Novum. Hold tight; I'm trying to reinforce your position. We're spread thin, though."

As Kruger's forces reached Adivan, the Chaos rabble were retreating in disarray. Two of the stormtroopers were down; one had taken a burst of las-fire to the head, and everything from the shoulders up had been reduced to vapour, while the other had been hit by over a dozen autogun rounds, and was lying, gasping, with half his ribs broken.

In spite of that, though, the enemy had broken. A rain of frag grenades further panicked them, and the two flamer-armed troopers continued to wade through them, converting the corrupted troops to ash as they scrambled to get away. All told, at least a hundred cultists lay dead or dying, possibly many more. Adivan turned to Kruger as the last cultists vanished, and gestured to the injured stormtrooper.

"Do any of your retinue have any medical expertise? One of my Stormtroopers needs attention ASAP."

"Sir! Some form of... chaos beast... has materialized near Bravo company!" Prius turned as the vox man called out the report.

"Details?" he snapped.

"It's... the vox just went offline, sir."

Prius turned to the senior surviving officer from the headquarters staff, a captain who served as the supply officer.

"You're in command now, Valter," he said, walking over to him. "Continue the reorganization of the line. We need to have a solid reserve established. I'm taking a squad over see what the feth is going on over there."

"Yes commissar," the captain said, trembling visibly.

"I have every confidence in you," Prius said, making the sign of the aquila. "The Emperor will see us to victory. Do you believe?"

Valter swallowed, then nodded convulsively. "Yes, I believe."

"Good man."

With that, Prius began making his way toward the disturbance. He heft his plasma pistol with one hand, and drew the special energy blade with the other. Hopefully inquisitor Gix would be able to dispatch the beast, but if not... Prius would keep to his offer to die by the man's side.

"Nice trick," said Gix. Idiot. What was it with these traitors that makes them think that they are the only ones who know who to use the warp?

Gix lashed out with a second assault, this one stronger than the first. Instead of targeting the psyker, this one tore down patterns of psychic force. Like the psyker's shields and power sink. With the other hand Gix raised his plasma pistol and fired. If he survived this, then Gix might be impressed.
