Alabama State Representative Gerald Allen steps up to bat to protect society!

This is inspiring, some selected excerpts:

I ask Allen what prompted this bill. Was one of his children exposed to something in school that he considered inappropriate? Did he see some flamingly gay book displayed prominently at the public library?

No, nothing like that. "It was election day," he explains. Last month, "14 states passed referendums defining marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman". Exit polls asked people what they considered the most important issue, and "moral values in this country" were "the top of the list".

So he regards his gay book ban as a work in progress. His legislation is "a single spoke in the wheel, it doesn't resolve all the issues". This is just the beginning. "To turn a big ship around it takes a lot of time."

"Dig a hole," Gerald Allen recommends, "and dump them in it."

Of course, Allen was talking about books. He was just talking about books. He never said anything about pink triangles.

Of course, when I said inspiring, I am inspired to spray this fucktard activist legislator with vomit.

I thought the standard practice of this sort of person was to put all of the books into a big bonfire while goose-stepping to the beat of Wagner.

No, fundies deffinately advocate book burning, see the chick trac on D&D for a truly heartwarming picture. I think they just frown on the goose stepping. Less torchlit parade, more "praise the lord" and hymns.

There were 11 ballot initiatives regarding Gay marriage. Once again, fundies and right wingers show their terrifying tendancy to regard their own exagerations of influence and opinion as proof af a national mandate. They use small cohesive groups to swing close elections, then claim it's what the whole country wanted. AND THEN they lie about the numbers so the misinformation spreads even further. Naseuiating.

You would think that the 'smaller government, less spending' Republicans would not be in such a hurry to waste the courts' time and money hearing and reversing blatantly unconstitutional laws like this.

Yes. They do and have, usually on a local level, though there have been several US-wide stoppings of print- most of them from the 1800s under various Anti-Indecency Laws.

The fact is that the biggest psychological hurdle has been overcome: the demonization of crackdowns on literature which was spawned by the actions of the Nazis a half-century ago has faded in peoples' minds, and fundies are now aggressively pushing an agenda of suppressing literature they find objectionable. The war on "ideologically impure" school textbooks has been ongoing for years now, and most people don't even recognize how intrinsically offensive that already is.

The war on "ideologically impure" school textbooks has been ongoing for years now, and most people don't even recognize how intrinsically offensive that already is.

I whole heartedly agree. In addition I think the PC movement has to take a chunk of the blame for demonizing the "ideologically impure."

Not to mention any play shown at a college which receives state funding... which is a whole hell of alot of them. I'm not as big a theatre buff as many people I know, but many of the plays in Pittsburgh are show via the unis and colleges here, and most of them draw state funds.
